Released on 4 March 2023 and part of the Adilette 22 line. This release has a synthetic upper in Grey Five/Grey Five/Core Black. The Adilette is the slide adidas has been making longer than most brands have made anything, and the 22 is the version that abandoned the flat poolside strap for a sculpted, almost geological shape. In grey it reads as an object more than a shoe: a single moulded form with a raised topography across the footbed, the Three Stripes cut into the strap rather than applied to it. This is adidas doing product design rather than heritage, closer in spirit to the engineering showmanship of the adidas 1 in 2005 than to anything in the Originals archive. You buy it for the shape, and the colour keeps that shape legible.
Slides live at the edges of the day. Wear them with black shorts and a plain tee for gym to home, or with wide grey sweatpants where the sculpted sole peeks out below the hem and does the styling for you. They also work as a travel shoe for airport security lines and hotel corridors. Moulded slides run large and are designed to be worn with the heel near the back edge, so size down if you are between. Rinse them with water and mild soap, dry away from direct sun since prolonged heat can warp a moulded sole, and never put them in a washing machine.
adidas has always been willing to make the strange product. The adidas 1 of 2005 was marketed as the world's first intelligent shoe, with a microprocessor performing five million calculations a second to adjust cushioning, and springblade used splayed blades in place of foam. A slide with a sculpted, alien footbed comes from that same appetite for spectacle, sitting under the three angled bars introduced in 1997 rather than the Trefoil. It is a performance and lifestyle crossover object, sold to people who want the brand's design point of view in the simplest possible format.
A one piece moulded slide with a contoured footbed and a thick, sculpted midsole, the strap and body formed as a single unit rather than assembled from parts. That construction is why it feels light in the hand and why there is nothing to come apart: no stitching, no glued overlays, no lining. The footbed contours mean it grips the arch and holds the foot in place better than a flat slide, which changes how it walks. Grey is the most forgiving finish on a moulded slide because the material picks up marks from the ground and a mid tone hides them, where a white or black version shows everything.
