Designed by Kanye West and released on 21 March 2024 as part of the Yeezy Slides line. This release has a eva upper in Slate Grey/Slate Grey/Slate Grey. The Slide reduced footwear to a single moulded shape when it arrived in December 2019: no laces, no adjustable strap, no stitching and no logo anywhere. Slate Grey is the mid grey version of that idea, and the kids run is the same object scaled down rather than a simplified copy, which is unusual for children's footwear and very much in keeping with a line that never made concessions to legibility. The colour name sits in the material vocabulary the brand has used since Pirate Black and Moonrock, describing stone instead of a season. For a child, the appeal is obvious: it goes on in one motion and there is nothing to fasten or lose.
Grey is the most forgiving colour you can put on a child's foot. Recipe one: navy shorts and a plain white tee for summer days, where the slide handles pool, garden and pavement without needing to be kept clean. Recipe two: grey joggers and a hooded sweatshirt for the school run, with a thick crew sock so the foot stays put. Moulded slides run narrow and short, so measure the foot and size up rather than down, and check that the band sits across the widest part of the foot without pinching. These are not for running or sport. Rinse with lukewarm water, scrub the footbed with a soft brush and dry in shade, since heat deforms moulded foam permanently.
The Slide and the Foam Runner are the two products that carried this label out of sneaker culture and into general fashion, and their shapes were copied across the mass market until they became a whole category of footwear. Kids versions followed adult demand rather than leading it, which is why they read as scaled down originals. The commercial run behind them ended on 25 October 2022, when adidas terminated the partnership, stating that comments and actions by founder Kanye West were unacceptable, hateful and dangerous and violated its values, and remaining stock was sold through afterwards.
One piece moulding does all the work here. The footbed, the band across the toes and the outsole are formed as a single body of foam, so there is nothing glued, nothing stitched and nothing that can come apart in a school bag. The underside carries moulded ridging for grip and the footbed is textured so a small foot does not slide forward on the bank. Grey pigment runs through the material, which matters more on a child's shoe than an adult's, since scuffs dull the surface rather than exposing a different colour beneath. The whole thing is light in hand and shrugs off water completely.
