Culture Note™
Released on 27 August 2021 and part of the LDV Waffle line. This release has a suede upper in Blue Void/Obsidian/White/White. The waffle is where Nike's own engineering begins. Bill Bowerman poured rubber into his wife's waffle iron looking for a lighter, grippier sole, and the tread that came out led to the 1972 Moon Shoe and the 1974 Waffle Trainer, the first shoes the company made rather than imported. This project takes that ancestry and doubles everything about it, with sacai's layered approach and Fragment Design's editing applied to the LDV Waffle, so panels, Swooshes and tongues appear twice. Blackened Blue keeps the whole complicated assembly in one dark register, which is the only reason it reads as a shoe rather than as a diagram.
Two builds. Layered dark: black wide trousers with a long coat, letting the doubled panels read as texture in a monochrome outfit. Casual technical: dark denim with a nylon jacket, where the twin Swooshes are the only detail doing any work. This model runs long and the layered upper takes up interior volume, so try before buying and consider going half a size down. Wear it dry, since layered textile and suede style panels hold water and dry unevenly, and keep it away from strong sunlight so the blackened blue tone does not shift across different panel materials.
Nike's archive has become a shared language for designers, and the waffle sole is the piece of it with the deepest claim to originality, since it predates the Swoosh being used on the company's own shoes. The brand has spent years opening that archive to outside hands, alongside a long history of partnership, from Wieden+Kennedy since 1976 to artist collaborations such as Takashi Murakami's digital work in 2022. What makes this project sit differently is that it does not decorate a classic silhouette, it duplicates it. That is a designer's joke about Nike's own ubiquity, and it only lands because the original is so familiar.
A doubled construction is exactly what it sounds like: overlapping uppers, layered panelling and repeated branding, sitting on a waffle patterned sole that descends from Bowerman's original experiment. That layering adds bulk and structure, so the shoe wears heavier and holds its shape more firmly than a plain runner. It also multiplies the number of surfaces that collect dust. Brush it dry and work between the layers rather than across them, spot clean with minimal liquid, and keep the pair boxed when you are not wearing it, because a shoe with this many seams and edges collects more grit standing in a hallway than most do on the street.
