Released on 19 May 2023 and part of the Mexico 66 line. This release has a leather upper in Black/Black. Triple Black is the Mexico 66 with the logo switched off. The whole point of the 1966 Mexico line was the crossed stripe, a device built to be seen from a stand and the first trademark the company ever put on a shoe. Rendering the stripes, the body, the heel and the sole edge all in black keeps that graphic present as texture and stitching while removing it as contrast. What is left is pure silhouette: a long, narrow, low flat with a slim toe and no lift. If you have ever wanted to know how much of this shoe's appeal is shape rather than branding, this is the version that answers the question.
Two recipes. First, black wool trousers with a black knit and a grey overcoat, a full column where the shoe reads as a soft alternative to a leather sole. Second, dark indigo jeans with a black leather jacket and a white tee, where the shoe stays out of the way and lets the jacket lead. This is the pair for offices with dress codes, evenings and travel days in bad weather. Take your usual size in the narrow, slightly long last. Condition the black leather every few weeks so it does not go grey, and use a dark friendly cleaner rather than anything foaming and bright.
Blacked out versions of famous silhouettes exist because the silhouettes themselves became famous, and the Mexico 66 got there twice. It was the shoe Onitsuka built to compete with Adidas and Puma before the 1968 Games, and it became the model Asics used to relaunch the dormant Tiger name in 2002 as a fashion label. Since the early 2020s it has been a staple of sneaker culture once more, riding the shift away from chunky sneakers toward slim, low profile shapes. Triple Black is the version bought by people already sold on the outline, who want it to work in rooms where a logo would be the wrong move.
Slim leather upper on a narrow last, low flat profile, thin cupsole, and the Tiger Stripes still stitched as overlay panels holding the quarter together even though they no longer read as a graphic. In an all black execution the stitching lines, the panel edges and the change in sheen between surfaces become the only visual detail, which puts real weight on the quality of the finishing. Practically, this is the most durable and lowest maintenance colourway in the line: creasing does not show, street dust does not show, and the blacked out sole edge hides the scuffing that ruins white midsoles. It stays flat and flexible underfoot.
