Culture Note™
Released on 3 August 2023 and part of the ReactX Infinity Run line. This release has a flyknit upper in Black/Anthracite/Black. Nike has spent its whole existence arguing about foam. Bowerman started it by pouring rubber into his wife's waffle iron because he thought runners deserved something lighter, and the company has since built Lunarlite for weight, ZoomX for response and a succession of midsole platforms aimed at different problems. The Infinity Run line targets the one runners care about most after speed: staying able to run at all, through a wide, stable, heavily cushioned platform. The 4 is the current generation and ReactX in the name marks the foam it rides on. Black Anthracite is the version that disappears into a wardrobe, a full dark upper with a slightly lighter grey-black tone breaking it up.
Recipe one, running: daily mileage, long runs and recovery days, especially if you fatigue into an unstable stride late in a session, worn with a cushioned crew sock and dark tights so the whole leg line stays continuous. Recipe two, casual: black joggers or straight dark denim with a charcoal hoodie and a black shell, where the anthracite tones let a heavy trainer pass as ordinary footwear. Size true, and lace through the top eyelet for heel lock if you have any slippage. Give the foam a day between hard efforts. Brush off dirt dry, wash laces separately, and never machine wash or heat dry, because that is what kills a midsole early.
The most influential thing Nike ever said was aimed at people who were not fast. Just Do It, written by Dan Wieden in 1988 and launched on 1 July that year with 80 year old runner Walt Stack, reframed running as something you simply did, and Advertising Age later placed it among the top five slogans of the twentieth century. Stability-focused high-mileage trainers are the product answer to that campaign, built for consistency rather than for records. Prefontaine, the brand's first track endorser and the face of running as attitude, is the myth at the front of the company; the shoe you actually put on for a wet Tuesday is the business behind it.
A wide, high-volume midsole with a rockered shape, built to guide the foot forward and reduce the wobble that fatigue introduces. ReactX is the foam platform named in the title and it is tuned for durability and stability rather than for the pure lightness of ZoomX. The upper is engineered knit with structured support through the midfoot and a padded heel collar, because a broad soft platform is only stable if the foot is held over it. Black Anthracite keeps the whole shoe in one tonal family, which flatters the bulk: a wide midsole in white foam looks enormous, while the same shape in dark grey reads as a normal shoe from three metres away.
