Origin
Released on 21 May 2024 and part of the The Roger Pro 2 line. This release has a mesh upper in White/Malibu. On began in Zurich in 2010, when Olivier Bernhard, a former Swiss Ironman champion, glued sections of a cut garden hose to a sole to see whether a hollow shape could land soft and push off firm. He had taken the idea to Nike and been turned down, so he built the company himself with David Allemann and Caspar Coppetti. The Roger line is the other half of that story. Roger Federer became a shareholder in November 2019, and the first shoe carrying his name launched in July 2020 as a limited edition. The Pro 2 sits at the competition end of that family, a court shoe rather than a lifestyle one, and White Malibu keeps it in tennis whites while a single blue accent does all the talking.
Utility
Two ways to wear it. On court, pair it with plain white shorts and a solid polo and let the Malibu blue be the only colour in the fit, which is how the shoe was drawn. Off court, treat it as a clean sneaker: cropped straight leg trousers in stone or navy, a white tee, nothing else branded, and the blue reads as an accent instead of sportswear. Sizing behaves like a performance tennis shoe, so keep it snug through the midfoot for lateral hold and leave a thumb of space at the toe for stops and drags. Care is simple and constant. Brush the white before dirt sets, wipe the midsole with a damp cloth after every hard session, air dry away from heat, never machine wash.
Influence
The Roger Pro 2 carries the weight of one relationship. Roger Federer has been a shareholder in On since November 2019 and the collaborator on The Roger, launched July 2020, and that partnership is what moved the brand from running specialist to something people wear off duty. The tennis roster that followed keeps the Pro line honest: Iga Swiatek, Ben Shelton and Joao Fonseca all signed in March 2023, and Flavio Cobolli in June 2024. What you get with a white court shoe from On is the brand's most public argument, that Swiss engineering can win on a surface where tradition usually wins, and that a clean shoe can still be a technical one.
Construction
White Malibu is a court build, so the priorities are lateral rather than linear. On's argument since the garden hose has been that cushioning is geometry, not material: foam shaped into hollow structures that compress under load and stiffen for take off. On a court that reads as a platform which absorbs a hard split step without going soft when you push out of it. Expect a court oriented outsole rather than the open pods you see on the road models, an upper braced against toe drag, and a white base that will show every scuff you earn. On is Swiss designed out of Zurich with production in Indonesia and Vietnam, so the engineering lives in the shaping, not in a country of origin stamp.
