Released on 8 November 2023 and part of adidas's Forum line. This release has a corduroy upper in Mesa/Tactile Rose/Cloud White. The Forum is an eighties basketball shoe defined by the strap across its ankle, a piece of hardware that was solving a support problem and ended up becoming the silhouette's whole identity. This pair gives that shape to The Simpsons and to the family's living room, the single most recognisable set in television, where the couch gag has run at the top of the show for decades. It is a smart choice of reference: a living room is domestic, static and unathletic, which is the exact opposite of a basketball shoe. The joke lives in that gap, and the Forum's blank panels give the graphic more room to land than a slim terrace shoe ever would.
Loud shoes want quiet clothes. Loose straight denim breaking over the strap with a plain heavy tee and a solid jacket is the right frame, and picking up one colour from the graphic in a cap or a sock is as far as you should take the theme. For a cleaner fit, black wide leg trousers cuffed above the collar puts the artwork on full display against nothing. Wear crew socks and leave the strap slightly loose, the way the shoe is meant to sit. The chunky sole handles long days well. Keep it out of heavy rain, because water and printed graphics on leather do not get along.
adidas has been handed culture and has also gone shopping for it. It was handed hip hop, when Run-DMC wrote My Adidas unpaid and the first endorsement deal between a musical act and an athletic company followed in 1986. It goes shopping when it licenses a property everyone already knows, which is the logic behind cartoon collaborations. The Forum in particular has become the brand's favourite canvas for that, a silhouette with enough surface area to carry a story and enough eighties bulk to look like a toy already. Wearing this is a low stakes cultural signal: it says you find the reference funny, and almost everybody gets it.
The Forum's bones do not change: a leather based upper with a high volume toe box, a padded collar and the ankle strap that adjusts the fit and defines the profile. adidas has treated the Three Stripes as structure since it bought the mark from Karhu Sports in 1952, and on a shoe with panels this large they anchor the whole side. The licensed artwork is where the work went, printed and applied across the upper, tongue and heel rather than confined to a hangtag. Graphics on leather need care: clean around them with a damp cloth and mild soap rather than scrubbing over them, and keep a shoe tree in the toe so creasing does not crack a print.
