Released on 24 September 2023 and part of Nike's ZoomX Invincible 3 line. This release has a flyknit upper in Black/Coconut Milk/Bright Crimson/White. Extra wide is the most useful two words on this box. Nike began in 1964 as Blue Ribbon Sports because Bill Bowerman believed runners were being underserved by what the market offered, and width has been one of the longest running versions of that complaint: a huge number of people run in shoes that fit their length and fight their forefoot. This is the Invincible 3, the maximal ZoomX trainer, built on a wider last rather than simply sold in a bigger size. Black and white with a wide base wants a straight or wide leg above it, not a taper. First: black running tights or shorts with a white tee, where the split colourway matches a monochrome training kit exactly. Second: black straight leg jeans with a slight break and a white crew, an off duty fit where the wider platform sits naturally under a fuller trouser. Order your usual length in the extra wide fitting rather than sizing up, because length and width are separate here and going long causes heel slip. Brush the knit dry, clean the white midsole with a foam eraser, and dry away from heat so the ZoomX keeps its softness.
Nike's technology narrative is usually told through elite performance, where ZoomX arrived in the Vaporfly and peer research found the package could improve marathon times by up to 4.2 percent, prompting World Athletics to set rules on 31 January 2020 capping sole thickness at 40mm and limiting shoes to one rigid plate. The quieter story is what happens to that foam afterwards, when it moves into training shoes and then into width fittings. Just Do It, from 1988 and launched with an 80 year old runner, always implied the whole field rather than the front of it, and a wide fit ZoomX trainer is that promise being kept in the least glamorous way possible.
Width changes a shoe more than people expect. A wider platform sits flatter under the foot, the upper has more material to distribute pressure across, and the toe box stops forcing the little toe inward on long runs. Underneath is ZoomX, Nike's altered Pebax foam, the lightest and most responsive in the range and the same family used in the Vaporfly, stacked generously so the ride is soft rather than sharp. The knit upper on a black and white pair shows its structure clearly at the panel joins. Nike's Flywire principle of cable led lockdown matters more here, since a wide foot needs holding without the upper squeezing across the top.
