Released on 15 March 2023 and part of adidas's Campus line. This release has a suede upper in Dark Green/Cloud White/Off White. Dark green over a gum sole is the Campus 00s at its most grown up. The 00s cut is the deliberately chunkier, wider read of the Campus, drawn to look like a pair pulled out of a wardrobe rather than off a shelf, and the dark green upper pushes it further in that direction. It sits inside adidas Originals, the division that inherited the Trefoil after the three angled bars took over performance branding in 1997. The Trefoil itself was designed in 1971 and launched for the 1972 Munich Olympics, and it carried the entire company for twenty six years before being reassigned to heritage product. Style code H03472 identifies this exact pairing of colour and cut, which matters on a silhouette with as many colourways as this one.
Dark green wants earth tones around it. Wear it with brown corduroy trousers and a cream knit for the autumn version, or with black denim and a heavy grey hoodie when you want the green to read almost as a neutral. Skip bright colours entirely with this pair. The gum sole grips well on dry pavement and poorly on wet tile, so mind the first step indoors in rain. The 00s cut runs roomy, so people between sizes usually go down. Brush the upper dry with a suede brush and clean the gum sole with an eraser rather than a wet cloth, since water dulls gum rubber and speeds up the yellowing.
adidas got its lifestyle business through adoption rather than design. Run-DMC released My Adidas on 29 May 1986 without being paid to, and at Madison Square Garden that July they had the crowd hold their shoes in the air with an adidas executive watching, producing the first endorsement deal between a musical act and an athletic company. Questlove has described it as the tipping point for the whole genre. Everything Originals sells now, this Campus included, runs on the credibility of that moment, when the shoes people already wore turned out to matter more than the ones the company was marketing.
Gum rubber is the load bearing decision here. It is softer and grippier than a standard white outsole, it ages to a deeper amber rather than going grey, and against a dark green upper it gives the shoe a warmth that a white sole would strip out. The 00s cut carries more volume through the toe box and a taller sidewall than the standard Campus, so the shoe reads heavy from the side and takes a wider foot comfortably. The Three Stripes across the midfoot began on adidas as reinforcement sewn into the upper rather than as a badge, and on a napped panel that stitching is the detail that shows wear first.
