Released on 1 July 2024 and part of the Ora Athletic Slide line. This release has a synthetic upper in White/Black. The Ora Athletic Slide in White Black is the most stripped down expression of what Hoka does. Take away the upper, the laces and the running brief, and what is left is the thing the brand was founded on in Annecy in 2009: an oversized cushioned platform. Nicolas Mermoud and Jean-Luc Diard built that platform so they could attack descents, and the same foam volume is what makes a slide worth owning once the run is done. White with black detailing keeps the shape legible, the sculpted footbed and thick sidewall reading clearly against the light upper. It is Hoka reduced to its founding argument, with nothing left to explain it.
Two ways to use it. First, post training: shorts, a loose tee, the slide worn barefoot straight out of the changing room, feet allowed to spread after being locked into a running shoe. Second, warm weather casual: cotton or linen shorts, a camp collar shirt, no socks, the white keeping the whole outfit light. If you wear socks with it, keep them plain and low, because a slide this sculptural does not need a second pattern. Sizing on slides runs long, so choose the size that puts your heel just inside the back edge. Clean the white with mild soap, a soft brush and cold water, and dry it out of the sun to keep the tone even.
Slides have their own logic in running culture. They live in kit bags, at track meets, in changing rooms and at ultra aid stations, worn in the minutes after an effort when nobody wants a laced shoe. Hoka came into that space with real authority because its reputation was built in ultramarathon and mountain racing, at events like Western States and UTMB, where the brand is now title sponsor. The healthcare wave added a second audience, people ending a twelve hour shift who want to get out of work shoes immediately. White and black is the version that reads as gym and poolside rather than trail head, which is how the slide moved into everyday wear.
A slide is judged on three things: the footbed contour, the strap and how the platform behaves when your foot is bare. Hoka's approach carries over from its shoes, where the priority is a low weight to cushion ratio rather than bulk for its own sake, so the volume underfoot should not feel like carrying a brick. The white upper and midsole are the honest risk here, since a light slide picks up scuffs from door frames, kerbs and gym floors quickly. Wear it barefoot and the contour of the footbed does the holding, so let the foot sit fully on the platform rather than hanging over the front edge.
