Released on 25 April 2024 and part of the Skyward X line. This piece is made in knit in Blanc De Blank/Virtual Blue. In 2009 the running industry was moving hard toward minimal shoes, and Hoka went the other way with midsoles two to three times thicker than normal. The press called it maximalist as an insult. Skyward X is what that insult looks like once the brand has won the argument: a road shoe whose sculpted, sweeping midsole is the entire design, unhidden and un-toned-down. Blanc de Blanc with Virtual Blue is the colourway that makes the geometry legible, an off-white body with a cool electric blue running through it, so the shape of the sidewall reads at a distance. Skyward X is the clearest statement of the position Hoka took at founding and never abandoned: this is not a minimalist or barefoot brand, it is the exact opposite, and the shape is the point. That stance was proved first in ultramarathon and trail racing, then adopted on hospital floors, then finally read by fashion as the running world's answer to the chunky sneaker. A shoe this sculptural only makes commercial sense after all three waves have happened. Everything here serves the geometry. The oversized stack is engineered for a low weight to cushion ratio rather than raw volume, and Hoka's rocker geometry is what converts that depth into forward roll instead of a soft, sinking feeling. The sculpted sidewall does what the brand's Active Foot Frame thinking has always done, seating the foot into the midsole rather than perching it on top, which is the only reason a platform this tall is manageable. The upper is a light engineered knit-feel mesh with a padded, structured heel. In Blanc de Blanc the white takes on scuffs quickly, and the Virtual Blue accents pick out the cutaways in the sole unit.
