Origin
Part of New Balance's 1906 line. This release has a mesh upper in Metallic Teal/New Spruce. New Spruce puts the 1906R into the outdoors, which is a natural fit for a shoe named after 1906, the year New Balance began near Boston as an arch support company. A deep green built on a technical runner reads as trail rather than track, and it sits well against a silhouette that already looks like it belongs on uneven ground. The 1906R is one of the brand's most engineered lifestyle shapes, exposing its layers rather than smoothing them, and green pulls that engineering towards something functional and utilitarian. Where the metallic versions of this shoe look like display objects, New Spruce looks like equipment you would actually leave by the door.
Utility
Deep green is easier to wear than people expect. Recipe one: black cargo trousers, a cream fleece or heavy hoodie and a shell jacket, an outdoor leaning fit where the shoe sets the palette. Recipe two: brown corduroy trousers, an ecru knit and a tan jacket, a warmer autumn build where spruce green acts as the grounding colour. The 1906R exists because New Balance's running archive became culturally interesting on its own. The brand built that archive quietly, sponsoring New York Road Runners and amateur road racing rather than buying celebrity, and its most famous shoes became famous by accident: the 990 family turned into the archetypal American dad shoe, worn for comfort rather than status, before normcore and high fashion reclaimed it in the 2010s. Green shifts the 1906R away from the grey heritage story and towards outdoor dressing, a register the shoe supports because it was drawn as a performance object first. The archive as fashion line became formal policy in April 2021 with Teddy Santis at Made in USA.
Construction
Green is a hard colour to build a technical shoe in, because it flattens fast unless the materials vary, and this build relies on the 1906R's layered panels to keep the tone alive across different surfaces. The block N rides the side wall as the house mark, and the sole unit carries the sculpted look the model is known for. New Balance's cushioning systems define the brand's approach: ENCAP wraps a soft EVA core in a moulded polyurethane rim for structure and low compression set, while ABZORB, a proprietary foam and rubber polymer blend, is the softer option built to disperse heel strike. Width fittings still apply, and a technical upper rewards getting that right.
