Released on 4 August 2022 and part of Nike's Air Zoom Alphafly NEXT% 2 line. This release has a synthetic upper in White/Total Orange/Black. The second generation Alphafly belongs to the period when the super shoe stopped being a surprise and became a specification. Nike's road racing platform combines ZoomX, its altered Pebax foam, with a plate and forefoot Air units, and it emerged from the same programme that produced the Vaporfly in 2017, the shoe peer research credited with improving marathon times by up to 4.2 percent. A prototype from this generation is a working document rather than a finished product. It exists to be run in, measured and argued over, which is a fair description of how Nike has developed shoes since Bill Bowerman was cutting up soles by hand in Oregon.
Use one: goal pace long runs and marathon specific sessions, where the forefoot units and the plate change your loading enough that adaptation matters more than novelty. Use two: racing, if the pair matches a retail specification and you have confirmed it is eligible for the event you are entering, since prototype builds are not automatically compliant. Avoid easy running in them entirely; the geometry punishes slow paces and the foam is too valuable to spend. Wear with a thin technical sock. Air dry loosely laced after wet use, keep them away from heat, and store flat where nothing compresses the midsole while it recovers.
Nike's founding conviction was that runners deserved lighter shoes than the market was offering, which is why a track coach and his former runner started importing Japanese ones in 1964 and selling them from a car boot. Six decades later the same conviction produced a category that governing bodies had to legislate: World Athletics published shoe rules on 31 January 2020 capping sole thickness at 40mm, allowing one rigid plate and requiring general retail availability. Prototypes carry weight in that world because they are the public evidence of what is coming next, and because the sport now watches development the way it once watched only results.
What separates the Alphafly recipe from the rest of the racing range is that it stacks two cushioning systems instead of choosing one. ZoomX handles the bulk of the compression and return, and Air units, the pressurised gas capsules Nike has been sealing into midsoles since it made them visible on the 1987 Air Max, sit under the forefoot to add a distinct second rebound where the toe off happens. A plate ties the platform together so the whole thing behaves as one lever. Prototype pairs frequently differ from retail in materials and finish, so treat the fit, the weight and the durability as unverified until you have run in them.
