Designed by Peter Moore and released on 5 April 2024 as part of Nike's Dunk line. This release has a leather upper in Bright Ceramic/Team Royal/University Red/White. The Dunk was built as a college and pro basketball shoe, which is why its identity has always been team colour rather than material or technology: the shape stays fixed and the palette tells you who you are supporting. Nike has been formally inside the professional game for years, serving as official on court uniform supplier to the NBA, WNBA and NBA G League since 2017 under a deal signed in June 2015 and extended for a further twelve years as announced in October 2024. A New York team colourway on a Dunk Low draws on that relationship and on something older: the blue and orange the name implies has been visible on the city's courts and streets for far longer than any supply contract.
Wear one: dark indigo jeans with a plain white tee and an orange accent at the wrist or the cap, so the palette repeats twice and looks deliberate. Wear two: grey sweatpants cuffed above the ankle with a navy hoodie, letting the orange do all the work at ground level. This is a strong colourway and it does not want competition, so keep patterns out of the outfit. Dunks run slim through the midfoot: half a size up if your foot is wide. Clean the white or pale panels first and the coloured ones second so you do not transfer dye, use a mild solution, and keep bright orange leather out of direct sun.
Basketball is how Nike entered popular culture. The Michael Jordan signing of 1984 and the Spike Lee directed Mars Blackmon advertising made Nike the shoe of the sport, and through the sport the shoe of hip hop, after which Air Jordans, Air Force 1s and Air Max models became fixtures of mainstream American youth dress. New York is where that transfer was most visible, because the city treats basketball as street furniture rather than as a ticketed event. A team coloured Dunk Low works there as a local signal first and a sneaker second, which is exactly the kind of meaning a brand can support but cannot manufacture.
A Dunk Low is a court build, and it wears like one. The collar sits below the ankle bone with modest padding, the toe box is broad for lateral push off, and the outsole is flat and grippy rather than cushioned, giving you ground feel instead of bounce. The panel blocking is the design: on a team colourway, each cut piece is a chance to place a colour, so the Swoosh, the toe overlay, the heel tab and the collar can each carry a different tone. That is why Dunks read cleanly from across a room. Expect a firm break in period of a week or so before the panels soften around the shape of your foot.
