Released on 2 October 2023 and part of the LeBron Witness 8 line. This release has a mesh upper in Black/Field Purple/University Gold. Nike's basketball authority was bought and built rather than inherited. The company started in 1964 as Blue Ribbon Sports, importing Onitsuka Tiger and selling out of Phil Knight's car at track meets, and only became a basketball name after signing Michael Jordan in 1984 and letting Spike Lee's Mars Blackmon ads carry the message. The Witness 8 belongs to the era after that, built around LeBron James, a Nike signature athlete and endorser. This EP version arrives in Black with Field Purple, a court colourway that reads dark from the tunnel and only shows its second colour when you move. It is the accessible end of a very expensive lineage: the same house language, priced for people who actually play four nights a week.
Play in them before you style them. On court, wear a crew sock in Field Purple or plain black and let the shoe do the talking against dark shorts. Off court, the Black upper handles a full black tracksuit with the purple as the only lift, or grey sweatpants and a purple hoodie if you want the colourway pulled out deliberately. Size true to your usual Nike basketball fit; the containment build wants a snug midfoot, not room. Lace through the top eyelet if you roll ankles. Keep them for indoor courts, since outdoor concrete will shred a court outsole fast. Wipe the upper with a damp cloth after sessions and never machine wash, which collapses the midsole and the internal support.
LeBron James is a Nike signature athlete and endorser, and he was one of the public voices supporting the brand when it built a long term campaign around Colin Kaepernick from September 2018, a moment that drew product burnings and police union condemnation as well as support. That is the context a shoe carrying his name lives inside. Nike has been the official on court uniform supplier to the NBA, WNBA and NBA G League since 2017 under a deal signed in June 2015 and later extended, so the visual language of the modern league is Nike's by contract. From the 1980s onward Nike shoes moved from courts into hip hop and everyday American youth dress, and takedown models like this one are how that pipeline stays open.
Read this as a hoop shoe first. The upper is a synthetic and textile build shaped for containment rather than display, with the Black base absorbing scuffs and the Field Purple used as trim and tooling accent. Nike's construction thinking here descends from Bowerman's original obsession, which was never decoration but weight: less material holding the foot more precisely. Flywire cabling is the clearest expression of that idea in the modern range, using cables instead of layers to lock the midfoot. The outsole is patterned for hard indoor courts, and the midsole cushioning sits under a foot that lands heavy and pushes off in short bursts. Expect it to feel stable and planted rather than plush.
