Two ways to wear it. Loose grey or khaki cargo trousers with a heavy crewneck, letting the strap and the blocky profile carry the outfit. Or narrower: dark jeans, a plain shirt and a coach jacket, so the shoe reads as sturdy rather than sporty. It handles cold and dry conditions well and looks wrong under formalwear. Size true and use the strap as a real fit adjustment. Suede is the vulnerable material: brush dry, protect before first wear, never dry it near a radiator. Unfasten the strap for storage so the stitching and elastic keep their tension.

Nike's growth into a global brand came with a habit of speaking to individual cities as well as to whole markets: it opened its first store in Santa Monica in 1966, moved to Beaverton in 1990 and opened the first Niketown in Portland the same year, building physical identity as deliberately as it built advertising. Just Do It, written in 1988, gave that identity a voice. City make ups are the footwear version of the same idea, a shoe that belongs to a place. The Air Trainer 1, all hardware and no frills, wears that well.

Leather and suede panels across a structured upper, a padded collar, reinforced midfoot and the adjustable forefoot strap that locks the foot for lateral movement. Nike Air is sealed inside the midsole for cushioning, and the outsole runs a dense rubber pattern designed for grip on hard indoor surfaces rather than for distance running. City editions carry their story in materials and detail work, tongue branding, lining and heel graphics, without altering the last. That leaves you with a heavier, more rigid shoe than any runner, which is exactly the appeal: it holds shape, resists creasing and stands up straight in a way soft shoes cannot. Break in mostly means softening the strap and collar.
