Designed by Peter Moore and released on 23 June 2023 as part of Nike's Dunk line. This release has a cork upper in Natural/Flax/Coconut Milk/Baroque Brown. The SP designation marks a Dunk built as a special project rather than a seasonal colourway, and it is the door Nike opens when a collaborator wants to change the material rather than the palette. CLOT takes that door and walks through it with cork, a material with no history in basketball footwear at all. Nike has been a materials company since Bill Bowerman poured rubber into his wife's waffle iron in pursuit of a lighter sole, but cork is not a performance argument. It is a texture argument, and putting it on a flat court shoe founded on leather panels is the kind of move only an SP build permits.
Cork is a warm natural texture, so build warm and natural around it. Recipe one: ecru wide-leg trousers, a brown knit polo and an unlined tan jacket, a full earth-tone stack where the shoe reads as the same material family as everything above it. Recipe two: dark indigo denim, a white tee and a black leather jacket, using hard surfaces to make the cork look softer by contrast. Dunks run long and narrow, so half a size down suits most feet. Never soak cork. Brush dry, spot clean with minimal moisture, apply a suede and natural-material protectant before the first wear, and keep the pair away from damp storage entirely.
Nike's collaborative history has largely been about handing a settled silhouette to someone with a different set of references, the way Nike SB let skate culture rewrite the Dunk and the way the Air Force 1 became common property in urban and hip hop fashion from the 1980s onward. Material collaborations are the most demanding version of that, because a colourway can be reversed and a material cannot. A cork Dunk is a permanent statement about what the shoe is made of. That is a bolder position than any two-tone palette, and it is the reason this build gets discussed as a design object rather than as a release.
Cork changes how the Dunk behaves visually and physically. Where leather reflects, cork absorbs, giving a warm, matte, granular surface with natural variation across every panel, which means no two pairs read identically. It is lighter than leather and more porous, so it takes on marks differently, and it will not crease into the sharp fold lines a leather Dunk develops at the toe. Underneath the shoe holds its standard geometry: a flat rubber cupsole, a low padded collar, and the wide, stable footprint of a court shoe. The trade you are making is character for durability, and the whole reason to own this pair is that the trade is visible.
