Culture Note™
Designed by Peter Moore and released on 10 June 2021 as part of Nike's Dunk line. This release has a leather upper in Sunset Pulse/Silver/Purple Pulse. Nike's retail story started small and moved fast: a first store in Santa Monica in 1966, an East Coast opening in Wellesley, Massachusetts in 1967, and by 1980 about half the US athletic shoe market. Growth like that turns a sports company into a colour company, because volume needs range. Sunset Pulse is pure range, a warm pink leaning coral that has nothing to do with team identity and everything to do with wanting a shoe that looks like a good evening. On the Dunk Low it works because the silhouette is plain enough to carry a soft tone without looking like a novelty, which is exactly why Nike keeps giving this shape its most seasonal colours.
Two ways. One, sun forward: off white linen trousers, a pale blue shirt worn open, a white tee underneath, so the pink sits in a summer palette. Two, hard contrast: black denim, a black tee, silver jewellery, where the coral becomes the single warm element and the fit reads sharper for it. Ideal for daytime, brunches, travel and hot weather cities. Pale colourways demand routine: waterproof spray before first wear, wipe after each wear, keep them off dusty roadsides, and use a mild foam cleaner rather than anything with bleach, which will blotch a warm pink permanently. A fresh set of white laces brings the pair back instantly.
Nike is the on court uniform supplier to the NBA, the WNBA and the NBA G League, a role it has held since 2017 under a deal signed in June 2015 and extended for a further twelve years as announced in October 2024. That reach is why Nike colour language travels so far: what starts as sport becomes everyday dress within a season. From the 1980s onward Nike models were absorbed into urban and hip hop fashion and then into general youth wardrobes, and softer palettes are how the brand keeps that audience widening rather than repeating itself. A pink Dunk is a mainstream product now, not a risk.
Warm pinks live on panel edges. The Dunk Low separates its toe, quarter, Swoosh and heel cleanly, so Sunset Pulse stays graphic rather than washing across the shoe as one smear of colour. The physical build is the same low cut, flat riding shape the Dunk has always had: unpadded collar, low stance, laces doing the fit work. There is no visible Air here and no attempt at it; this is a shoe that gets its comfort from a short break in and a familiar footprint. Pale warm tones stain fast, especially at the toe, so treat these before first wear and clean marks the day they happen.
