Designed by Eric Avar and released on 6 September 2024 as part of the Kobe 8 System line. This release has a mesh upper in White/Court Purple/University Gold. Nike has been the official on court uniform supplier to the NBA, WNBA and NBA G League since 2017 under a deal signed in June 2015 and extended for a further twelve years as announced in October 2024, which means the league's visual language and Nike's are now the same language. The Kobe 8 Protro in Lakers Home is that overlap at its most literal: white with the purple and gold that no other franchise can claim. Protro is Nike's designation for a retro rebuilt with current technology rather than reissued as it was, so this is a returning silhouette that has been re engineered rather than reprinted. The colours are memory. The build underneath is not.
Recipe one, on court: white or black shorts, a white tee, so the purple and gold read as team colour rather than as an outfit choice. Recipe two, off it: black straight leg denim, a white tee, a purple or cream overshirt, keeping the gold as the accent you do not repeat anywhere else. Play in it on indoor hardwood, where the low cut and light build actually help, and understand that low top basketball shoes offer less ankle coverage by design. Fit snug with no heel slip. The 1984 Michael Jordan signing and the Spike Lee directed Mars Blackmon advertising made Nike the shoe of basketball and, through basketball, of hip hop. A low cut basketball shoe on the Kobe line's deliberately minimal last, which is the point of the model: low to the floor, light on the foot, built for guards who change direction rather than for players who land heavy. Nike Air, the pressurised gas unit sealed in the midsole that the company has refined since making cushioning a visible design feature from the 1987 Air Max onward, provides the impact protection. The Protro rebuild means the cushioning and materials are current generation rather than the originals. A white base with purple and gold is an unforgiving combination on court, because scuffing on white shows instantly, so this pair asks to be kept for indoor floors or kept clean.
