Designed by Peter Moore and released on 21 June 2020 as part of Nike's Dunk SB line. This release has the Bright Ceramic/Green Spark colourway. The Dancing Bears are one of the most recognisable pieces of iconography in American music, and putting them on an SB Dunk Low in orange produced a shoe that people who have never skated can identify across a room. It also came from a company that had learned hard lessons about music. Nike used the Beatles' Revolution without Apple Records' approval in 1987, was sued, and pulled the ads in March 1988. Nike SB then appropriated Minor Threat's album art in 2005, drew a public rebuke from Ian MacKaye and apologised on 27 June 2005. A shoe built openly around a band's imagery, with the band named on it, is a different proposition entirely.
First: loose fit faded denim with a plain white tee and a flannel tied at the waist, an outfit that lets a shoe this loud sit inside a familiar American casual register rather than fighting it. Second: black cargo trousers with a plain black hoodie, so the orange is the only colour and the texture does the talking. Best for dry days, gigs and weekends. SB lasts run slightly narrow through the toe, so try true to size. The fuzzy upper is the whole care problem: brush gently with a soft brush in one direction, never soak it, keep it away from rain and mud, and store it in a box so the pile does not flatten under pressure.
This is Nike SB at its most legible, using music iconography as design rather than decoration, and it lands in a lineage where the company's cultural entry ran through basketball and hip hop from the 1980s onward and then out into every scene its shoes reached. The Dunk was the silhouette that made that expansion possible because skaters adopted it first and Nike followed. Bright, character led colourways are what turned SB from a niche line into a collector market. The relevant comparison is not another sneaker but a tour shirt: the value is in the iconography and who recognises it, not in the technology underneath.
The defining feature is the upper material: a fuzzy, hairy synthetic finish rather than the suede or leather an SB Dunk normally uses, in a saturated orange that carries the bear reference on the tongue branding. That material choice is the reason this pair is instantly identifiable and also the reason it is fragile, since fur style uppers mat, flatten and collect dirt in a way smooth panels do not. Underneath, the skate build is intact: a thick padded tongue, a foam collar and a Zoom Air unit in the heel for landings, sealed pressurised Nike Air being the cushioning the brand has built midsoles around since the 1987 Air Max. The outsole is flat court rubber with a pivot circle.
