Released on 15 August 2023 and part of the ReactX Infinity Run line. This release has a flyknit upper in College Navy/Black/Sail/Platinum Tint. The Infinity Run was built around a different question from the racing line. Instead of asking how fast a shoe can make you, it asks how much running you can keep doing, which is why the platform is wide, the midsole is high and the rocker is pronounced. The fourth version runs on ReactX, Nike's reworked foam for daily training, and College Navy gives it a deep, saturated blue that pulls the whole shoe towards the conservative end of the running wall. That matters commercially: this is a shoe people wear five days a week, on roads and in offices, and navy is the colour that survives that kind of use without looking like sports equipment.
Two ways to use them. First, as intended: daily easy mileage and long runs, where the wide base and high stack keep you comfortable deep into a session. Second, as a standing shoe, for long shifts, travel days and city walking, where the rocker and the cushioning do more for you than any fashion sneaker will. Size true with a thumbnail of space, and lace through the last eyelet if your heel lifts on the rocker. Rotate them with a second pair so the foam recovers between runs. Remove the insoles to dry after wet runs, clean the knit upper with a soft brush and cold water only, and never machine wash or tumble dry a foam midsole.
Nike's daily training shoes carry the least glamorous part of the company's history and arguably the most important. Bill Bowerman started making shoes because he thought runners deserved better than the market gave them, and his waffle iron experiment produced the tread that carried the 1972 Moon Shoe and the 1974 Waffle Trainer into ordinary running. Steve Prefontaine, his athlete at Oregon, became the brand's first track endorser and its symbol of running as attitude. Just Do It, launched in 1988 with an 80 year old runner named Walt Stack rather than a champion, was aimed at exactly the person who buys this shoe: someone whose running is not a career.
This is a stability-through-geometry design. A wide base under the heel and forefoot limits how far the foot can roll, a high stack of foam absorbs repeated impact, and a rocker profile helps the foot move through the stride instead of demanding it flex. The foam is ReactX, engineered for daily mileage rather than for race day return, so the ride is cushioned and even rather than springy. The upper uses a knit construction to wrap the midfoot, following the principle Nike proved with Flywire, that a foot can be held securely with minimal material. College Navy hides road grime well, which is a genuine practical advantage on a shoe intended for high weekly volume.
