Released on 5 October 2023 and part of the ReactX Infinity Run line. This release has a gore-tex upper in Deep Jungle/Geode Teal/Total Orange/Black. Nike Grind recycles manufacturing scrap and worn shoes back into new product and surfaces, and ReactX belongs to the same generation of thinking, foam engineered for the run rather than for the spec sheet. The Infinity Run line is the one built for consistency and injury resistance across high mileage, and the GORE-TEX version extends that logic into weather. Deep Jungle with Total Orange is the correct colourway for it: a dark saturated green that hides trail spray and winter road grime, cut with an orange bright enough to be seen at dusk. This is the shoe for the months when running stops being pleasant and starts being a decision, which is the exact audience Nike has addressed since 1964.
Recipe one, winter road: black tights, a dark green or black long sleeve, an orange or reflective gilet that picks up the accent on the shoe, gloves. Recipe two, off road commuting: dark tapered trousers, a waterproof shell, wool socks, where the GORE-TEX upper is doing real work getting you across a wet city. Use it for rain, slush and cold, and switch to a breathable trainer in summer, because the membrane will cook your feet. Size true with room for thicker socks. Rinse the outsole after muddy runs, let it dry away from radiators so the membrane is not damaged, and never machine wash a GORE-TEX shoe.
Nike's cold weather product line exists because of how the brand defined running culture in the first place, through Steve Prefontaine as its first track endorser and its symbol of running as attitude rather than sport. The Just Do It line, written in 1988 by Dan Wieden and first aired on 1 July 1988 with 80 year old runner Walt Stack, is functionally about this shoe: going out when there is every reason not to. Advertising Age named it a top five slogan of the twentieth century and it sits in the Smithsonian. A waterproof trainer in a dark green is that idea as equipment rather than as a poster.
A cushioned neutral trainer using ReactX foam, with a GORE-TEX membrane built into the upper to keep water out. That membrane is the defining trade off of this shoe. It genuinely keeps rain and puddle spray from soaking through, and it also reduces breathability, so your feet will run warmer than they would in the standard mesh version. Deep Jungle green carries the bulk of the upper with Total Orange accents, a combination chosen because dark colours hide the mess that wet weather makes of a running shoe. The Infinity platform is wide and stable underfoot with high cushioning, so the ride is soft and protective rather than fast and responsive.
