    Culture Note™

Designed by Eric Avar and released on 17 October 2024 as part of Nike's Zoom Kobe 5 line. This release has a synthetic upper in Deep Royal Blue/Baltic Blue/Glacier Blue. The Kobe 5 belongs to the era when Nike basketball argued that lower was better, that a cut below the ankle gave a guard more court feel than a high top ever protected him from. That argument only had weight because Nike had already won basketball outright: the Michael Jordan signing of 1984 and the Spike Lee directed Mars Blackmon campaigns turned a running company into the shoe of the sport, and through the sport, into the shoe of hip hop. Protro in the title marks this as a returning signature model rather than a first run. X-Ray is the nickname that stuck, a pale, skeletal treatment where the shoe reads like an overlay of its own structure rather than a block of colour.
Two ways to wear it. On court: it wants a hardwood floor, a fresh sock and nothing else in the way, so pair it with mid length shorts that sit above the knee and let the low collar show. Off court: black or charcoal tapered trousers with a slight break, a plain heavyweight tee, and the pale shoe carrying all the contrast at floor level. Size true, and expect a snug low volume midfoot rather than a roomy one. Keep pale translucent panels away from dyed denim, which transfers. Wipe the toe after every session with a slightly damp cloth, since the marks that ruin a light court shoe are rubber scuffs, not dirt, and they set if you leave them.
Basketball is how Nike stopped being a running brand and became a cultural default. From the 1980s the Swoosh moved through urban and hip hop fashion, with Air Jordans, Air Force 1s and Air Max models turning into staples of American youth dress before reappearing in 1990s and 2000s casual and athleisure looks. Nike has been the official on court uniform supplier to the NBA, WNBA and G League since 2017 under a deal signed in June 2015, extended for a further twelve years as announced in October 2024. Signature low tops occupy a specific slot in that history: they are the shoes people who actually play argue about, and they carry a credibility that logo driven pairs never quite buy.
This is a low cut basketball shoe, which means the whole build is a negotiation between weight and containment. Nike's answer across that period was Flywire, cables threaded through the upper so lockdown comes from tension rather than layers of material, letting the panels stay thin. Underfoot, Nike Air remains the house cushioning idea, a pressurised gas unit sealed into the midsole, the invention that made cushioning something you could see as well as feel. The X-Ray treatment lives in translucency and pale tonal panels, so the eye tracks the shoe's internal lines. Expect a close, low volume fit through the midfoot and a shoe that feels quicker than it looks. Court shoes are also the fastest to scuff.
