Origin
Released on 9 October 2024 and part of New Balance's 1906 line. This release has a mesh upper in Black/Dark Silver Metallic/Phantom. The number is the year the company started. New Balance was founded in 1906 near Boston by William J Riley as the New Balance Arch Support Company, making arch supports and shoe accessories rather than shoes, and the 1906 line is the brand naming a shoe after that beginning. The 1906A is the more aggressive read of it, a technical runner shape with a sculpted, armoured upper rather than a soft retro one. In full black it loses the panel by panel legibility that lighter colourways have and becomes one continuous form, which is the version that appeals to people who want the engineering without the colour blocking. It is heritage used as a name, not as a costume.
Utility
All black gives you the widest range and the least room for error, so use it to carry technical clothing. First recipe: black tapered trousers with a black shell jacket and a grey base layer, a monochrome fit where the shoe is texture rather than colour. Second: dark washed jeans with a charcoal hoodie and a longer black coat, letting the sculpted sole be the only visible detail. Because the upper is structured, it holds shape better with a hem that stops just above the laces. Take your usual size but consider the width fitting, since the layered overlays do not stretch. Wipe with a damp cloth, brush the mesh dry, and keep them out of prolonged rain.
Influence
New Balance's technical running shoes have always had a second life outside running, which is how the brand got culturally significant in the first place. The 990 family became the archetypal American dad shoe, worn for comfort rather than status by people including Steve Jobs, and that plainness was reclaimed as a design position in the 2010s. The 1906 line arrived after the reappraisal, when the archive was already being treated as a fashion line, a process formalised when Teddy Santis of Aime Leon Dore was appointed creative director of Made in USA in April 2021. Black is how this shoe gets worn in cities where nobody wants to look like they are trying.
Construction
A layered black upper of mesh with synthetic and suede overlays, with the block N integrated into the structural panelling rather than sitting flat on it. Underneath is New Balance's ABZORB cushioning, the proprietary foam and rubber polymer blend that disperses heel strike impact before it travels up into the knees and hips, sitting under a technical runner platform with a rubber outsole cut for grip on pavement. Black on black hides the layering until you are close, which is the point, and it also hides scuffing better than any other colourway of this shoe. What it does not hide is dust on the mesh, which shows grey against black in daylight.
