Designed by Tinker Hatfield and released on 5 December 2020 as part of the Air Jordan 9 line. This release has the White/Black/University Blue colourway. University blue points at North Carolina, the programme Michael Jordan played for before Nike signed him in October 1984, and one Jordan Brand still supplies alongside Georgetown, Cincinnati and Michigan. On the ninth model it lands somewhere unusual. By the time the line reached this number it had long been a Tinker Hatfield design series rather than a yearly basketball release, with its own vocabulary of materials and marks established from the third shoe onward. The 9 is one of the more sculptural silhouettes in that run, and dressing it in a college colour rather than a franchise one shifts the emphasis from the team to the player who came out of Chapel Hill.
Two recipes. First, black technical trousers with a navy shell jacket, a cold weather fit where the pale blue is the only bright note and the shoe's bulk looks intentional. Second, straight leg grey sweatpants with a white hoodie, where the volume of the shoe balances the volume of the clothing. This silhouette is too tall for a tapered hem that catches at the collar, so stack it or clear it. Size true to length with a snug heel. Protect before wear, brush after every outing, and and store it away from sunlight so the pale blue holds its tone instead of drifting grey.
Jordan Brand became a standalone Nike division in 1997 and by 2022 was generating about 5.1 billion dollars, with a reported 150 to 256 million dollars flowing back to Jordan under the royalty term he negotiated as a rookie. The college relationships are the oldest part of that story, and North Carolina is Jordan's own university, which is why UNC blue functions as canon inside this catalogue rather than as a seasonal option. Deeper numbered retros like the 9 are bought by people who already know the line and are looking past the 1 and the 4, which makes a college colour on one a fairly specific signal.
This is classified as performance footwear and it wears like it: the 9 is a substantial, structured shoe with a full collar and considerably more material than any Retro 1. Nike Air cushioning has been in the line since the second model, and the numbered line added carbon fibre shank plates for torsional stiffness as it progressed, which is the design direction this part of the catalogue sits in. University blue is a light saturated tone that shows scuffing sharply and sits next to panelling that will age at a different rate. Brush any napped material rather than wiping it, clean the midsole separately, and keep the pair out of rain because a heavily panelled upper dries unevenly.
