Air Max 90 "Panda" sneakers
Air Max 90 "Panda" sneakers
Culture Note™️ / ملاحظة الثقافة
Origin
By 1980 Nike held roughly half the US athletic shoe market and went public, and the decade that followed is where the modern brand was actually built: the Air Max arrived in 1987, the Jordan signing of 1984 became a business of its own, and Just Do It gave the company a voice in 1988. The Air Max 90 is the shoe that carries that decade's confidence in its proportions. This is the Panda, style code CN8490, a black and white split that removes every accent colour and leaves the panel structure to do the work. Most Air Max 90s are remembered for a bright hit around the Air window. This one is remembered for refusing to have one.
Utility
Black and white goes anywhere, so make the clothes interesting instead. Recipe one: black straight trousers with a white oxford shirt and a grey overshirt, the shoe finishing a monochrome build without adding noise. Recipe two: mid wash denim, a black hoodie and a black cap, cuffing the jeans so the sole split is visible. Suited to daily wear, city travel and casual work environments; not a running shoe, despite the name and lineage. Size true to length and note the toe box runs slightly narrow. The white panels are the maintenance job: protect them before first wear, clean with a soft brush and mild soap, and avoid bleaching the midsole, because on a two tone shoe uneven yellowing shows immediately.
Influence
Air Max models became staples of mainstream American youth dress from the 1980s onward and status markers in urban and hip hop fashion, then reappeared through 1990s and 2000s casual and athleisure looks. The 90 in particular travelled beyond America and became a genuinely global default, which is how a black and white version turns into the most versatile shoe on a shelf. Nike's own infrastructure grew alongside that reach: the company moved to its Beaverton, Oregon headquarters in 1990 and opened the first Niketown in downtown Portland the same year, turning the catalogue itself into a destination. This pair is the plainest possible slice of that catalogue.
Construction
A two colour build exposes construction. The 90 is made of stacked overlays, a mudguard, a midfoot panel, a heel counter and the collar, and when those pieces are split between black and white you can read the shoe like a diagram. Nike Air, the pressurised gas unit sealed in the midsole and visible from the 1987 Air Max onward, sits under the heel and is framed here in the darker tone rather than highlighted. Expect the model's usual combination of textile and synthetic overlays and check the exact composition in hand, since no material breakdown is published to you here. The shoe is tall and heavy compared with a modern runner, which is why it holds its shape in photographs and on the street.
