Culture Note™
Released on 25 October 2022 and part of adidas's Forum line. This release has a suede upper in Aluminium/Branch/Brown. The Forum arrived from adidas basketball in 1984 built around an ankle strap and a raised collar, and the 84 designation on this pair points directly at that original spec rather than at a modernised reissue. The Low is the cut that strips the model back to its cleanest form, keeping the wide cupsole and the panelled upper while losing the strap and the collar height. Branch Brown takes it somewhere the eighties never did: a warm, muted earth tone across the whole shoe instead of the white and team colour blocking the Forum was born in. Style code GW4334. It is the version that makes a basketball shoe read as a wardrobe piece rather than as a reference to a decade.
Brown asks for warm colours around it. Cream or ecru trousers with a chocolate knit keeps everything tonal and lets the shoe finish the outfit, and washed indigo denim with a tan jacket gives it a stronger contrast while staying in the same temperature. Avoid pure black, which makes brown leather look dusty. The Forum Low runs true to size with a slightly roomy toe box, so no adjustment is needed for most feet. Condition the leather every couple of months so the tone stays even, wipe rain off rather than letting it dry in, and use a cream polish matched to the shade rather than a neutral one if scuffs go pale.
adidas basketball fed street culture more effectively than it fed the league in the long run, and the company eventually built a division to formalise that. adidas Originals, marked by the Trefoil since it was designed in 1971 and launched for the 1972 Munich Olympics, took over the archive when the three angled bars became the performance mark in 1997. The Forum sits inside that archive as the mid eighties hardware alternative to the shell toe, a shoe people wanted for its panelling and its strap rather than for a player who wore it. Earth toned colourways are how a silhouette like this stays in rotation without being redesigned, which is the entire business model of Originals in one pair.
The Forum's bones survive the colour change. A leather upper carries the panelling that gave the original its structure, the cupsole underneath is broad and flat in the way a court shoe needs, and the Three Stripes run the sidewall as a structural element rather than a badge, which is how adidas has treated the mark since buying it from Karhu Sports in 1952. Tonal brown is a demanding treatment because there is no contrast to hide construction, so every stitch line and panel edge is visible. That works in the shoe's favour if the leather is good and against it if the shoe is neglected: brown leather dries out faster in appearance than white does and benefits from occasional conditioning.
