Origin
Released on 9 August 2023 and part of the Mach X line. This release has a jacquard upper in Ocean Mist/Lime Glow. The Mach family is Hoka's answer to a fair question: what happens when the brand built on maximum cushion decides to go fast. The X sits at the sharp end of that family, built for the days the pace matters. Ocean Mist with Lime Glow is exactly the colour language Hoka has used since the beginning, a cool blue base cut by an acid green that lands somewhere between highlighter and citrus. Loud colour blocking was part of the identity from the French start, when the founders were building shoes that looked nothing like the minimal running footwear the industry was pushing in 2009. This pair carries that instinct forward. It is not a shoe designed to disappear.
Utility
Recipe one, session day: black split shorts, white technical tee, and let the Lime Glow read as the only colour on you. Recipe two, off duty: washed indigo jeans or wide grey sweats, a marine blue crew that picks up the Ocean Mist, everything else neutral so the green stays a single note. Keep it for tempo runs, race rehearsals and travel days when you want cushion without weight, and choose something plainer if you need the shoe to be invisible. Go true to size and lace with a runner's loop through the last eyelet if your heel lifts at pace. Clean the light blue upper with a soft brush before marks set, and never dry it on a radiator.
Influence
Hoka's reputation was earned in ultras and mountain racing, where extra cushion on long descents was decisive rather than decorative, and the brand became a fixture at Western States and UTMB before eventually becoming the title sponsor of UTMB. Jim Walmsley, the sponsored athlete who defines the modern brand, is a multiple Western States champion and in 2023 became the first American man to win UTMB with a course record. That racing seriousness is what a speed leaning Mach borrows. The colour, meanwhile, belongs to the third wave, when the maximal silhouette crossed into fashion and partners like Satisfy Running, BEAMS and Brain Dead started reworking Hoka shapes for people who care how a shoe looks standing still.
Construction
The build brief is a low weight to cushion ratio, which is the metric the brand has chased since its first oversized outsoles: keep the stack generous, keep the shoe off the scale. The rounded rocker geometry matters more here than on any easy day trainer, because a shoe meant for turnover needs to tip you into the next stride rather than ask your calf to do it. The Ocean Mist upper is the calm half of the design and the Lime Glow accents mark the sidewall and branding. Expect the shoe to feel most natural at pace, less so shuffling around. Air it after use, keep the foam out of hot car boots, and let it decompress a full day between hard sessions.
