Adidas Adizero Adios Pro 4 Ekiden Pack
Adidas Adizero Adios Pro 4 Ekiden Pack
Culture Note™
Origin
Adios Pro is the top of the adizero pyramid, adidas's marathon racing shoe, and the fourth version continues a line whose whole reason for existing is to make a specific distance faster. The Ekiden Pack ties it to Japan's long-distance relay tradition, where teams run a marathon in stages and shoe choice is scrutinised the way equipment is in few other sports. That framing suits adidas: this is a company whose founder made event-specific shoes by watching athletes in Herzogenaurach rather than guessing, and the Adios name itself has been carried by racing product for years.
Utility
Save these for races and hard workouts rather than daily mileage, and rotate them with a cushioned trainer so the racing geometry stays a tool rather than a habit. Wear thin technical socks and lace carefully, because a close racing last punishes bunched fabric over a long distance. Do a couple of shorter fast efforts in them before a race so the foot learns the platform. Off the road, they read as a serious runner's shoe and pair simply with black shorts and a technical tee. Air after every run, never wash or heat dry, and retire them by mileage rather than by how the upper looks.
Influence
Distance racing is where adidas's engineering reputation is most directly tested, the same programme that produced Boost in 2013, a thermoplastic polyurethane developed with BASF whose bounce comes from processing rather than raw material, and which carried the adizero Adios Boost. The company reports 23.683 billion euros of annual revenue and 62,035 employees, second only to Nike, and the racing line is a large part of why that performance claim holds. An Ekiden framing adds the cultural layer, a nod to a relay tradition where the shoe is genuinely part of the conversation.
Construction
The adizero competitive racing line is built on thermoplastic polyester elastomer midsoles with embedded carbon rods rather than a single stiff plate, so the sole flexes differently across the foot instead of behaving as one rigid unit. Expect a very light engineered upper with minimal overlays, since every gram counts in a marathon shoe, and a race-oriented last that fits close. Racing shoes are consumable equipment: keep them for race days and key sessions, never machine wash or heat dry, and air them fully after every run. Clean with a barely damp cloth. Do not fold or compress the midsole in a bag, since rod structures dislike being stored under load.
