Released on 6 January 2023 and part of New Balance's 550 line. This release has a suede upper in Concrete/White/Sea Salt. Concrete in a suede pack is New Balance operating in its native material. Suede is the fabric this brand's reputation is made of, the surface that turned a grey running shoe into a design object once normcore and then high fashion got hold of it in the 2010s, and putting it on the 550 moves a court derived silhouette out of the gym and into the same conversation. The colour is doing the same job as the material: Concrete is a cool mid grey, urban and unbothered, the least decorative choice available. Utility

Construction
Suede changes both the look and the ownership terms of this shoe. It sits softer against the light than leather, so the 550's flat panels gain depth they do not normally have, and a grey nap reads warmer and less clinical than a smooth grey upper. Underfoot, the house has separated structural support from shock absorption since ENCAP arrived with the 995 in 1986, a polyurethane rim around a soft foam core, and on a court last the result is firm and low rather than cushioned. Expect a snug midfoot that eases as the nap softens, and expect the suede to crease at the toe rather than crack.
