Designed by Bill Bowerman and released on 25 August 2018 as part of Nike's Blazer line. This release has the Wolf Grey/Cool Grey-Pure Platinum-Volt colourway. The Blazer is one of Nike's oldest and simplest shapes, a basketball shoe from before basketball shoes had any technology in them, which is precisely why designers keep returning to it. There is nothing to remove, so the only way to change it is to expose how it is made. That is the logic of this Off-White treatment: seams shown, materials interrupted, the shoe presented mid-assembly. Wolf Grey keeps the palette neutral so the deconstruction reads clearly, and the Queen naming ties the release to Serena Williams, an endorser of the brand. It is a shoe about tennis and basketball and construction all at once, and it works because the base silhouette is so plain.
Two ways to wear it. First, clean and quiet: black or charcoal tailored trousers, a white shirt or fine knit, letting the exposed construction supply all the texture. Second, casual and loose: baggy grey sweats or wide denim with a hoodie, where the mid collar sits nicely under a stacked hem. Blazers run long and narrow, so a half size down suits most people. Dry conditions only, because raw edges and exposed stitching take on water and stay damp. Do not machine wash. Brush by hand, use a suede eraser on any napped panels, keep the exposed thread away from harsh cleaners, and store with support so the tall collar does not fold.
Nike's endorsement roster is the frame for a release like this. Serena Williams is among the brand's endorsers, and she was one of the public voices supporting the Colin Kaepernick campaign Nike built from September 2018, alongside LeBron James. That period is when Nike's marketing shifted from selling performance to taking positions, and design collaborations that pull the brand's own products apart belong to the same confidence. The Blazer is a good vehicle for it because it carries almost no baggage: no Air unit to protect, no signature athlete to honour, just a shape old enough that anyone can argue with it. That is why deconstructed Blazers landed harder than deconstructed anything else.
Deconstruction here is a real technique rather than a graphic. Panels are cut back or left with visible edges, stitching is exposed instead of hidden under overlays, and the swoosh is treated as an applied object rather than as part of the pattern. Underneath is the original Blazer build, a tall mid-cut upper on a flat, thin vulcanised-style bottom with no visible cushioning, which is what makes the shoe sit so low and feel so direct underfoot. In Wolf Grey the exposed construction is easy to read, since a mid grey shows edges that black would swallow. Wearing it, expect an unforgiving ride on hard ground, a long break-in at the collar, and an upper that ages visibly, which is the intention.
