Designed by Bill Bowerman and released on 16 September 2023 as part of Nike's Blazer line. This release has a leather upper in Phantom/Neutral Olive/Dark Russet/Black. Phantom with Neutral Olive is a muted, almost military pairing on the Blazer Mid, the tallest and simplest of Nike's court shapes. The Blazer's appeal is that it looks handmade compared with everything the company builds now, a shoe from the period when Nike was still proving it could make its own product at all. Blue Ribbon Sports spent 1964 to 1972 distributing Onitsuka Tiger before ending that relationship and launching under the Nike name, with the Swoosh first used on 18 June 1971. Early Nike court shoes were plain by necessity. Olive and off white is that plainness given a modern, slightly outdoorsy tone rather than a sporting one.
Recipe one: full utility, olive fatigues, a cream heavy tee and a tan canvas jacket, so the shoe reads as part of the uniform. Recipe two: contrast, black slim trousers with a white shirt, using the mid collar to add height under a cropped hem. Good for daily wear and casual work, less good as a walking shoe over long distances given the thin midsole. Fit runs narrow and slightly long, so many people size down half. Care: brush the olive panels dry, use a suede or nubuck brush if the panels have nap, keep water off the Phantom sections, and let them dry slowly rather than near heat.
Nike's oldest silhouettes matter now because of where the brand ended up, not where it started: from the 1980s onward its shoes became status symbols in urban and hip hop fashion, entered mainstream American youth dress and reappeared through the 1990s and 2000s in casual and athleisure looks. The Blazer travelled through skate culture too, and Nike SB has had its own complicated relationship with that world, including a 2005 incident where it used Minor Threat's 1981 album artwork on a tour flyer, drew a rebuke from Ian MacKaye, apologised on 27 June 2005 and settled out of court. Subcultures are lent, not bought, and Nike learned that publicly.
The Blazer Mid is a tall, narrow court shoe with a minimal midsole, a padded collar and a very large Swoosh running most of the length of the quarter panel. That oversized Swoosh is structural, adding stiffness to an otherwise soft sided upper, which is one reason the shoe holds its shape. Underneath, the outsole is flat with a herringbone influenced pattern, part of the tread lineage Bill Bowerman started when he poured rubber into his wife's waffle iron to make a lighter, grippier sole. There is very little cushioning here by modern standards. Expect a firm, direct ride and a break in period at the collar, which is normal for this last.
