Released on 23 March 2021 and part of the Heritage Vulc SB line. This release has a suede upper in Coast/Psychic Blue/White/White. The Heritage Vulc is the plainest shoe Nike SB makes, and that is its argument: a low cut vulcanised skate shoe with no signature athlete, no visible technology and no story to tell. Coast and psychic blue give this pair two shades of blue rather than a base and an accent, a pale washed tone against a deeper saturated one, which keeps the shoe soft rather than sporty. Style code CD5010-401 marks the blue run. Nike came to skating with enormous scale behind it, having held roughly half the US athletic shoe market since 1980, and its most credible skate product has always been the least branded.
Two blues sit best against warm neutrals: cream shorts, a washed tan tee, white socks visible above the collar. The second recipe is denim on denim, with light wash jeans and a chambray shirt, where the psychic blue picks up the indigo. Good for walking, standing, skating and travelling; there is little arch support, so avoid long distance days if your feet need structure. Sizing is true to length and narrow in the toe box, and the sole breaks in within a week. Clean dry with a brush, spot treat with a damp cloth, and never machine wash, since heat and tumbling can break the sole to upper bond that defines the shoe.
Nike SB carries one public scar: the 2005 use of Minor Threat's album art, the criticism from Ian MacKaye, the apology and the settlement. Everything the sub brand has earned since has come from product that does not try to borrow the scene's language. Plain vulc lows in soft colours are the clearest example, worn as much by people who never step on a board as by skaters, and stocked as a shop default rather than a release. Pale blue in particular has become a summer staple in skate adjacent dressing, the colourway you wear when you are not trying to signal anything.
Vulcanised construction bonds the outsole to the upper under heat instead of dropping the shoe into a moulded cupsole. The result is thinner, more flexible and closer to the ground, which is what board feel actually means. The upper is cut simply with reinforcement where grip tape wears fastest, the tongue and collar carry moderate foam, and the lacing sits flat. Two blues mean the panel breaks are visible without any hard contrast, so the shoe reads as a single soft object from a distance. Nike's engineering instinct since Bowerman's waffle iron has been to take material out, and a vulc low is that instinct with nothing added back.
