    Culture Note™

Released on 31 August 2023 and part of Nike's Dunk SB line. This release has a canvas upper in Black/Black/Multi-Color. Nike SB is where the company deals directly in other people's culture, and this release names its terms openly: a Dunk Low made with Supreme, honouring the artist Rammellzee. The Dunk itself came from basketball and was adopted by skaters, who liked its flat sole and hard wearing panels, and Nike SB built a programme around that adoption. Supreme is the skate label whose collaborations on the silhouette are among the most traded objects the line has produced. Putting an artist's name on the shoe changes the register. It stops being a colourway and becomes a tribute, which is a much harder thing to design, because the shoe has to carry someone else's work without flattening it.
Two approaches. Skate correct: baggy denim or loose carpenters, a heavyweight tee, a hoodie, visible socks, the shoe worn as intended and allowed to wreck itself. Considered: black or charcoal trousers with a modest break, a plain black or white tee and an unlined jacket, so the artwork on the shoe is the only pattern anywhere in the outfit. Do not compete with it. SB Dunks fit true with a thicker tongue than a standard Dunk, so allow a week of breaking in. If you keep them clean, brush rather than wash, store out of sunlight to stop prints fading, and use paper in the toe box.
Nike's relationship with artists has been mixed and public. It has got it badly wrong, most notoriously when Nike SB used Minor Threat's 1981 album art on a 2005 tour flyer, drawing a rebuke from Ian MacKaye before Nike apologised and settled out of court. It has also invested properly, acquiring the virtual sneaker studio RTFKT in December 2021 and working with the artist Takashi Murakami on digital product in 2022. A named tribute release sits on the correct side of that line: the artist is credited on the shoe rather than borrowed from. That is the difference between appropriation and collaboration, and Nike SB learned it the expensive way.
The SB build is the foundation: a Dunk Low reworked for skating with a padded tongue and collar for impact and reinforced panels where a board wears a shoe out. Art driven releases put the pressure on materials and print rather than on the shape, since the silhouette cannot change. That means the panels are effectively a canvas, and the quality of the finish is what you are paying for. Nike's outsole thinking traces back to Bowerman ruining a waffle iron in search of grip, and every skate sole since is a version of that same problem. Treat printed or specially finished panels gently: brush dry, never soak, and if you intend to skate in them, accept that riding a shoe like this destroys the artwork first.
