Origin
Released on 4 November 2022 and part of Nike's Dunk SB line. This release has a suede upper in Coastal Blue/Speed Yellow/University Red. Why So Sad belongs to the strand of Nike SB releases built around a concept rather than a colourway, where the theme runs through the panels, the lining and the details instead of stopping at the upper. Blue is the obvious colour for the idea and the shoe uses it as a mood rather than as a team signal, which is the clearest possible break from what the Dunk was drawn to do. SB is the only part of Nike that treats the Dunk as raw material for storytelling, and it earned that freedom because skateboarders adopted the shoe on their own terms long before there was a skate division to sell it to them.
Utility
Blue on blue is easy to wear and hard to make interesting, so put texture around it. Loose washed black denim, a heavy grey hoodie and white socks pulled visible is the honest skate reading. For a cleaner version, navy pleated trousers with a white shirt, which lets the blue read as tonal rather than casual. This is a daytime and street shoe, comfortable for long walking because of the Zoom insole. Sizing runs long, half down for most feet, though skaters often stay true for a snugger board feel. Keep the midsole clean, since a blue upper makes a yellowing sidewall very obvious.
Influence
Skate has been Nike's most delicate cultural relationship. Nike SB's use of Minor Threat's 1981 album art on a 2005 tour flyer drew a rebuke from Ian MacKaye and an apology from Nike on 27 June 2005, and the division has spent the years since earning credibility by letting shops, artists and riders lead. Concept releases are the format that came out of that: a shoe with an idea in it, made in numbers small enough that the scene sees it first. It is a very different posture to the one that built the brand through Michael Jordan and Spike Lee in the 1980s.
Construction
Built to SB specification: a padded tongue and collar to absorb board impact, a Zoom Air insole underfoot, and a rubber cupsole with the grip pattern skating actually needs. Nike Air here is a sealed pressurised unit doing work you feel rather than see, which is the opposite of the Air Max approach. The upper on a concept release usually mixes textures across panels, so expect different cleaning behaviour on each: brush suede dry, wipe leather damp, and leave printed or specialty sections alone unless they need it. If you skate them, the ollie area on the medial panel goes first, and no amount of care changes that.
