Nike SF Air Force 1 High Ridgerock
Nike SF Air Force 1 High Ridgerock
Culture Note™️ / ملاحظة الثقافة
Origin
Designed by Bruce Kilgore and released on 12 January 2018 as part of Nike's Air Force 1 line. This release has the Ridgerock/Sequoia colourway. Nike spent its first decade solving a track problem and its second solving a basketball one, and somewhere after that it started applying the same panel logic to shoes that were never going to see a court. The SF Air Force 1 High is the clearest example: the Air Force 1 name and cushioning platform rebuilt as a boot, with a taller shaft, utility hardware and a lug ready silhouette. Ridgerock is a warm brown earth tone, which is the colour that completes the translation. It moves the shoe out of the gym and into the same wardrobe as work boots and field jackets, while keeping the one thing that makes it a Nike: the Swoosh sitting where a basketball shoe would wear it.
Utility
Fit one: raw or dark denim tucked into the shaft or stacked over it, with a waxed cotton or canvas jacket, treating the boot as the anchor of a utility outfit. Fit two: olive fatigue trousers and a heavy knit, where brown and olive do the work and nothing needs to be bright. This is genuinely useful in cold and wet weather, but it is not a technical hiking boot, so keep it off long mixed terrain days. Lace fully for support, or leave the upper eyelets open for a slouched shaft. Brush dry mud off rather than washing it, and treat the upper before winter.
Influence
Utility styling entered fashion from military and workwear surplus, and sportswear brands met it coming the other way, which is how a basketball nameplate ends up on a boot. Nike's own history is full of these crossings, from the Special Field styling language to the way its models moved out of sport and into mainstream American youth dress from the 1980s onward. The company also has a long habit of buying its way into new categories rather than only designing into them, having owned Cole Haan, Bauer Hockey, Hurley, Converse, Starter and Umbro at various points, though only Converse remains among the major subsidiaries. Hybrid boots are the design version of that appetite.
Construction
A boot has to solve retention rather than agility, and the SF build reflects that: a high shaft that holds the ankle, a lacing system that runs further up the leg, and hardware chosen for pulling tight rather than for lightness. Underneath it keeps the Air Force 1 cushioning platform with Nike Air, a pressurised unit sealed in the midsole, which is why this wears more like a padded sneaker than like a rigid boot. Ridgerock brown is a practical finish for the category, since earth tones absorb trail dust and scuffing instead of showing it. Expect real weight compared to a low top, and expect the shaft to soften considerably after the first fortnight.
