    Nike's road racing programme changed shape in 2017, when the Vaporfly put ZoomX, the company's altered Pebax foam, together with a full length carbon fibre plate and produced marathon results that peer research linked to improvements of as much as 4.2 percent. Everything the brand has sold on a road since sits downstream of that. The Zoom Fly line is where the same thinking is built for people running their own distances rather than chasing records. This edition carries a marathon runner's name and the phrase It's Just The Start printed as its identity, which is a message about what comes after a result rather than about the result itself.

    Two ways to use it. Race day over 10km to the marathon, with a thin technical sock and no cotton anywhere, where the firm platform pays you back for running hard. Or a weekly tempo session, where you want the shoe to feel different from your daily trainer so your legs know what session they are in. Do not use it for walking, gym work or standing all day, because thin race uppers wear through at the flex point. Size with a thumbnail of room at the toe since feet swell over distance. For care, never machine wash, air dry in shade, and rotate with a cushioned trainer so the foam recovers between hard efforts.

    The plated shoe era is the most publicly argued chapter in Nike's history, and it ended in regulation rather than in a ban. World Athletics issued rules on 31 January 2020 capping sole thickness at 40mm, limiting shoes to a single rigid plate and requiring genuine open retail availability, and compliant Vaporfly models remain legal to race in. That is a very different outcome from the myth that the shoe was outlawed. Nike's road authority reaches back much further, to Steve Prefontaine, Bill Bowerman's runner at Oregon and the first track athlete the company ever endorsed, whose statue stands at the Beaverton headquarters.

    This is a firm, forward leaning road shoe rather than a soft one, and the colouring is built for legibility in motion. Uppers in this part of Nike's range are thin, breathable and light, because on a road shoe weight is the enemy and protection is a secondary concern. That means fast drying, very little water retention and almost no shielding from sharp debris. Text based detailing on a special edition sits on the upper and the insole rather than changing the platform. Expect the ride to reward faster running and feel unremarkable at a slow jog, and expect the outsole rubber to be the part that limits how long the shoe lasts.
