Released on 30 April 2023 and part of Nike's Zoom Rival line. This release has a mesh upper in White/Pure Platinum/Metallic Silver/Black. Waffle is the oldest word in Nike's engineering vocabulary. Bill Bowerman, coaching track at the University of Oregon and convinced his runners deserved lighter shoes than the American market sold, poured rubber into his wife's waffle iron and produced the tread that became the 1972 Moon Shoe and the 1974 Waffle Trainer. That grid is the company's founding invention, older than the Air unit, older than Just Do It, older than the Jordan business. Rival Waffle is the competition flat that still carries the name, and White Black is the plainest possible version of it: a light upper, a dark grid, nothing in the way of either.
Utility
Two ways to use it. Cross country and grass sessions, with a thin sock and nothing else, where the waffle grid does exactly what it was invented to do on soft, uneven ground. Or fast track and road repetitions when you want a light, low shoe under you and can handle the lack of cushioning. This is not a shoe for long slow mileage, standing, or walking on concrete, and it will feel harsh if you use it that way. Size snug, since a flat should not move on your foot. For care, knock dry mud off the grid rather than washing it, never machine wash a thin upper, and air dry in shade after wet sessions.
Influence
Nike's identity was assembled from the track upward. Steve Prefontaine, Bowerman's pupil at Oregon, was the first track athlete the company endorsed and remains its symbol of running as attitude rather than as sport, with a statue at the Beaverton headquarters. Sebastian Coe, Carl Lewis, Michael Johnson, Jackie Joyner-Kersee and Allyson Felix followed. The waffle sole is the physical link back to the beginning of all of it, the piece of Nike that predates the marketing machine entirely, and it is the reason the company can claim a manufacturing story rather than only a branding one. It started as an importer of Onitsuka Tiger; the waffle is what made it a shoemaker.
Construction
The waffle outsole is the whole idea. A grid of raised rubber nubs grips loose and uneven ground by biting into it rather than by sitting flat on it, which is why the pattern belongs to cross country and to fast, light shoes rather than to road cruisers. Racing flats in this family are built minimal on purpose: a thin, breathable upper, very little padding and almost no midsole stack, so you feel the ground and carry no extra weight. White uppers on a competition shoe are honest about how they age, since a light textile picks up grass, mud and dust and does not fully come back. Expect a firm, direct, unforgiving ride.
