Origin
Released on 13 August 2023 and part of the Mexico 66 line. This release has a leather upper in Airy Green/Verdigris Green. Kihachiro Onitsuka started making basketball shoes in Kobe in 1949 and picked the tiger for strength and agility, and that instinct for a single strong graphic is what eventually produced the crossed stripe on this shoe. Airy Green takes the 1966 Mexico shape and drops it into a soft, desaturated green that sits somewhere between sage and sea glass, set against a pale base. It is a colourway with no aggression in it at all, which suits a silhouette that was designed to be fast and light rather than loud. If most Mexico 66 colourways are archive quotations, this one is the shape talking in its own voice about a season rather than a decade.
Utility
Two recipes. First, wide leg ecru linen trousers, a white camp collar shirt worn open and a plain vest underneath, letting the green read as the only colour in the fit. Second, washed black slim jeans and an oversized grey sweatshirt, where the soft green stops the whole thing going flat. Construction
The build is the classic Mexico 66 recipe: a slim leather upper over a narrow last, a low flat profile and a thin cupsole with no lift and no visible tech. The Tiger Stripes are applied as overlay panels across the quarter, which is what keeps a shoe this minimal from collapsing sideways when you walk. Airy Green sits on the stripes and the heel tab, with the pale base carrying the rest of the upper, so the green reads as a wash rather than a block. Soft greens on leather are unforgiving about scuffs, so the finish rewards care. Underfoot you get a flat, close to ground feel that suits walking rather than standing all day.
