Culture Note™
Designed by Nic Galway and released on 27 December 2023 as part of the PureBoost line. This release has a mesh upper in Charcoal/Iron Metallic/Core Black. Pureboost is the version of adidas running that removes the plastic cage and lets the foot sit almost directly on the foam. It exists because Boost was good enough to build a shoe around, and Boost is the defining modern adidas technology, launched in adidas running in 2013 and carrying the Ultraboost, NMD, Energy Boost, Pure Boost and adizero Adios Boost. The 23 update continues that idea of a soft, unstructured daily trainer. Charcoal is the correct colour for it, dark and undramatic, which suits a shoe whose appeal is what it feels like rather than what it looks like. It is running product bought by people who genuinely run.
Use it as a soft daily trainer rather than a race shoe. Recipe one: black running shorts and a technical tee for easy miles and recovery runs, where the unstructured upper is more forgiving than a caged runner on longer efforts. Recipe two: grey joggers and a dark hoodie for travel and long days on foot, since charcoal makes it pass as a normal shoe off the road. Knit uppers hold sweat, so air it out between sessions and never leave it in a closed bag. Clean with mild soap and a soft brush and dry at room temperature; heat degrades foam midsoles. Retire it on feel, when the rebound flattens.
Boost is the technology that pulled adidas running back into relevance and then escaped into everyday wear, because its pellet surface was recognisable to people who had never read a spec sheet. That is a familiar pattern for this company. The Superstar's rubber shell toe became the brand's most copied silhouette detail after basketball, then hip hop, made it visible, and Run-DMC's My Adidas arrived in 1986 as an unpaid song before any deal existed. Boost did the same thing through material rather than through music. A charcoal Pureboost is the unglamorous end of that story, worn for its ride, which is where the technology started.
Boost is a thermoplastic polyurethane developed with the German chemical company BASF, formed from thousands of fused TPU pellets, and its bounce comes from processing the material rather than from the raw polymer. Compared with the industry standard EVA foam it returns more energy and behaves more consistently across temperatures, which matters as much for Indian heat as for European cold. Pureboost pairs that midsole with a soft, minimally structured upper, so the shoe flexes with the foot instead of holding it in a frame. Charcoal keeps the knit upper and the midsole close in tone, so the shoe looks like a single mass. Expect softness first and stability second, which is the tradeoff of the line.
