Designed by Kanye West and released on 11 December 2021 as part of adidas's Yeezy Foam Runner line. This release has a eva upper in MX Sand Grey/MX Sand Grey/MX Sand Grey. The Foam Runner arrived in June 2020 as the strangest object the Yeezy partnership produced, a moulded one piece clog with holes where a normal shoe has panels, and MX Sand Grey is one of the marbled colourways where the material is swirled rather than dyed flat. The partnership began when adidas announced it on 3 December 2013 and launched in February 2015 with the Boost 750 Light Brown, 9,000 pairs gone in ten minutes, and it ended in October 2022 when adidas terminated the relationship after its design partner's antisemitic remarks and his White Lives Matter shirt at Paris Fashion Week, calling his comments and actions unacceptable, hateful and dangerous. Sand grey is a warm neutral, so it works with earth tones better than with black. Wear it with wide leg beige or olive trousers cropped just above the ankle so the moulded edge is visible, and a plain heavy tee, letting the shape be the only statement. The second use is purely practical: a slip on for the house, the studio, short errands and travel, since it goes on and off in a second and rinses clean. Wear a sock with it if you want to avoid the sweat that moulded foam causes. Rinse with cool water and mild soap, and never leave it in direct sun or a hot car, because heat warps foam permanently.
adidas has a long habit of building footwear that argues with the definition of a shoe, from the adidas 1 of 2005, sold as the world's first intelligent shoe with a microprocessor running five million calculations a second, to springblade replacing foam with splayed blades. The Foam Runner belongs in that company as an object, whatever you think of it. Its commercial context is closed. The line was generating around 1.7 billion dollars a year by 2020, adidas ended the partnership in October 2022 over the designer's antisemitic remarks, and in February 2023 agreed to sell roughly 500 million dollars of remaining stock with part of the proceeds going to anti hate organisations.
This is a single piece moulded foam product, so there is no stitching, no lining, no laces and nothing that breaks in. Everything comes out of the mould: the perforations that ventilate the foot, the sculpted arch, the ridged sole. A marbled MX finish means the colour is mixed through the material rather than applied to the surface, so every pair varies slightly and scuffs do not expose a different colour underneath, which is a genuine practical advantage on a light shade. Foam construction is very light and slightly unstable underfoot, warm in hot weather because it does not breathe beyond the holes, and permanently deformable if it gets hot. Style code GY3969.
