Origin
Designed by Kanye West and released on 25 August 2023 as part of the Yeezy Slides line. This release has a eva upper in Granite/Granite/Granite. Granite is the Slide in its most literal register. The model landed in December 2019 as an argument for subtraction, one moulded shape, a thick sole, a wide banded strap, no laces, no logo, nothing stitched, and its colours were named after the surfaces it resembled. Granite is a cool mid grey that looks like the material it borrows from, which suits a product with a matte, slightly porous foam surface. It sits at the practical end of the palette, unlike the sharper tones the line later produced. adidas terminated the Yeezy partnership on 25 October 2022, so slides in circulation are archive stock and no longer part of an ongoing size run.
Utility
Grey foam is the easiest slide colour to actually live in. Recipe one: grey sweat shorts and a white tee for home and errands, worn barefoot, keeping the whole outfit within one tonal family. Recipe two: black wide leg trousers with a black tee and thick white socks for the deliberate version of the look, where the grey sits between the two and softens the contrast. Slides run large, so size down one for a secure fit, with the strap crossing the widest part of the foot. Ideal for travel, poolside and short walks, not for long distances or wet smooth floors. Rinse in cool water, wipe dry, avoid solvents, and store away from heat and sun so the foam keeps its shape.
Influence
The Slide is where Yeezy stopped being a sneaker line and became a general fashion object. It moved out of drop culture into ordinary wardrobes and was copied across the mass market fast enough that the moulded slide became a standard product category rather than a specific shoe. That was the anti branding thesis proved: with no logo to protect it, the shape alone carried the recognition, and then the shape got taken. Kanye West founded and designed Yeezy, and adidas terminated the partnership on 25 October 2022 following his antisemitic public remarks, which the company called unacceptable, hateful and dangerous.
Construction
One piece injection moulded EVA, front to back, with the strap arch, footbed and ridged outsole all formed from the same body of foam. There is nothing to glue, nothing to stitch and nothing to line, which is why the pair weighs so little and why it survives water without complaint. The footbed carries a light texture so the foot does not slide when damp. Grey foam is the practical choice here because it holds its appearance longer than the pale tones, which grey out quickly at the toe and heel edges. Expect firm cushioning that softens with body heat, a broad fit across the forefoot, and an open heel that asks you to walk with a slightly shorter stride.
