Designed by Peter Moore and released on 3 June 2021 as part of Nike's Dunk line. This release has a leather upper in White/Team Green/White/Total Orange. By 1980 Nike held roughly half the US athletic shoe market and took the company public, which is the moment it stopped being a challenger and became the default. Everything the brand made after that had scale behind it, including the court shoes that eventually escaped the court entirely. A Dunk Low in Varsity Green belongs to the oldest idea in that catalogue: take a white leather body, drop a single team colour on the overlays, and let the palette do the identifying. Varsity green is a deep, slightly blue leaning green, the colour of institutional kit rather than anything fashionable, and that is precisely why it works. It carries none of the season's noise. It looks like it has always existed, which is the highest compliment a Dunk colourway can earn.
Two combinations. Green and grey is the safest pairing: mid grey sweatpants or flannel trousers with a white tee, letting the shoe read as the only saturated element. Or push it collegiate: light wash denim, a navy crewneck sweatshirt, white crew socks visible above the collar. It suits campus, weekends, casual offices and travel, and reads better with a straight or slightly cropped leg so the panel blocking stays visible. Fit is true to size with a snug instep that settles in a week. Care is where deep green needs attention: wipe after wear, keep the white panels clean since dirt on white next to green reads as neglect quickly, and avoid harsh cleaners that lift dye from the coloured leather.
The Dunk's team colour logic is a leftover from basketball that turned into a design language of its own. Nike's court models became status objects in urban and hip hop dress from the 1980s, then returned through casual and athleisure wardrobes, and by the second wave the colours had detached from any actual roster. Varsity green today reads collegiate in the abstract: sporting, slightly preppy, nothing to do with a specific programme. That neutrality is the reason these palettes keep getting reissued while louder collaborations come and go. It is the version of the shoe that ages without dating, and the one most likely to still look right several years from now.
A leather panelled low top on a rubber cupsole, with the green taking the Swoosh, toe overlay, eyestay and heel against a white or off white body. The Dunk's appeal is structural rather than technical: stitched overlays instead of bonded ones, a padded collar, flat woven laces and a foam sockliner. Nothing about it is trying to be fast or light. What you get instead is a broad, flat platform that stands up to daily wear, plus the waffle derived tread pattern that traces back to Bill Bowerman's rubber experiments and still grips well on smooth indoor floors. Green leather is a slightly more demanding surface than black, since deep dyes show cleaning abrasion, so it rewards gentle care over aggressive scrubbing.
