Designed by Peter Moore and part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in Medium Olive/Sail/Light Orewood Brown. Medium Olive is a military green softened to the point of politeness, and it lands on the women's low cut of the Air Jordan 1. The model was drawn by Peter Moore with Bruce Kilgore for a rookie Nike signed in October 1984, and it reached the public on 1 April 1985 dressed in Chicago red, black and white, a palette that still works as brand colours in itself. Olive belongs to none of that. It comes from a wardrobe rather than from a team, which is precisely what the shoe became after Jordan Brand was established as a standalone Nike division in 1997 with its own apparel programme and its own colour direction to run.
Olive plays with earth and with cold, so pick a lane. First: cream or bone wide leg trousers, a white tank or tee, a tan jacket, gold jewellery, everything warm so the green reads soft. Second: black straight leg denim, a black knit, a grey coat, letting the olive be the only thing with any temperature in it. Avoid navy, which sits too close and makes both look uncertain. Genuinely practical for daily wear and travel, since the colour tolerates dust and the low cut suits warm weather. Brush the upper dry, use foam sparingly, keep solvents away since olive dyes lift unevenly, and dry them out of sunlight.
Jordan Brand outgrew basketball a long time ago, becoming sole equipment provider to the Michigan Wolverines football team in 2016 and sponsoring Paris Saint-Germain in 2018, and its signed roster includes women's athletes Maya Moore and Jordin Canada. The cultural foundation stayed where it started, in the collision of basketball and hip hop, with Spike Lee directing Nike's first campaigns as Mars Blackmon and 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z putting the shoes on record. Olive is what that heritage looks like when it stops performing. It is the colourway you buy when you want the silhouette in your rotation permanently rather than in your collection occasionally.
The low cut keeps the original separated panel layout and drops the padded ankle collar, so the Swoosh is the largest shape and the colour blocking has nowhere to hide. Olive is a middle value tone, which makes it the most practical colour family on this silhouette: it does not show dust like white or scuff pale like black, and it holds its depth in both daylight and indoor light. Nike Air arrived in the signature line at the Air Jordan 2, so this sits flat and firm underfoot, stable rather than cushioned. On a women's last the midfoot runs shallower, so lace through the middle eyelets firmly and leave the top pair with some slack to avoid pressure on the instep.
