Released on 16 January 2023 and part of adidas's adiFOM Superstar line. This release has a eva upper in Core White/Core Black/Core Black. The Superstar arrived in 1969 with a moulded rubber shell toe made to protect players' feet under the basket, and by 1973 it was reportedly on more than 75 percent of NBA players. Then hip hop took it and gave adidas a second life the company had not designed. The adiFOM Superstar takes that heavily loaded silhouette and reissues it as a single piece of moulded foam, keeping the shell toe as a sculpted ridge rather than a stitched rubber cap. Core White is the only honest way to buy it, because the Superstar's fame is a white shoe with dark stripes and this version needs the base colour to make the reference readable at a glance.
White foam wants contrast, not more white. Black wide leg trousers, a white tee and a black cap keeps it graphic, or grey sweat shorts and an oversized navy hoodie makes it a home and errands shoe with an obvious wink. Wear it with visible white or black ribbed socks so the openings frame something intentional. This is warm weather and casual footwear: light, easy to rinse, wrong for rain that soaks socks and wrong for anywhere that needs a real sole. Wash with cool water and mild soap as soon as it greys, dry in shade, and never leave it on a balcony in full sun.
No adidas shoe carries more borrowed history. Run-DMC wrote My Adidas without being paid for it, released it on 29 May 1986, and on 19 July that year at Madison Square Garden had the crowd hold up their shell toes with an adidas executive watching from the audience. The endorsement deal that followed was the first between a musical act and an athletic company, and Questlove has called that night hip hop's tipping point. This foam version is a joke that only works because everyone still knows the shape. It is the Superstar reduced to its outline, and the outline is enough, which is the proof of how deep the silhouette went.
Everything that was leather, rubber and stitching on the original is now one moulded foam form. The shell toe survives as a ribbed relief across the front, the Three Stripes appear as raised or cut detailing rather than stitched panels, and the openings through the body take the place of perforations. Foam makes it light, water tolerant and washable in a way the leather Superstar never was, and it removes lace adjustment entirely, so fit is about the volume of your foot rather than how you tie it. Core White shows marks quickly but cleans easily with soap and a cloth. Keep it out of hot cars and direct sun, because heat permanently distorts moulded foam.
