Origin
The Adios Pro Evo 1 is the most extreme shoe adidas makes, the marathon racer where the company stripped away everything that was not directly involved in moving you forward. It descends from the adizero Adios lineage, the line adidas has put under record attempts, and it uses the construction the brand chose over a single carbon plate: a thermoplastic polyester elastomer midsole with embedded carbon rods. Pharrell Earth is that machine finished in the earth toned palette of Pharrell Williams, a long standing adidas designer collaborator, whose adidas work has consistently been about taking the most technical product in the building and colouring it like clothing. Utility
Save it for race day and for a handful of sharpening sessions beforehand, on smooth road, at goal pace. Using it for easy miles wastes the outsole and the midsole for no benefit. Off the road, the earth palette makes it unusually wearable with wide brown or olive trousers and a cream knit, or with black tailored trousers where the tonal shoe becomes the softening element rather than a sports reference. Go true to your race size with a thin sock and do not overtighten the laces on a minimal upper. Never machine wash it, dry it away from heat, and accept that this class of shoe has a limited mileage life by design.
Influence
adidas changed the running industry once already when it launched Boost in 2013 with the German chemical company BASF, moving the default away from EVA to a thermoplastic polyurethane whose energy return came from fusing thousands of pellets and which behaved consistently in the cold. Handing the flagship racer to Pharrell Williams, a designer collaborator rather than an athlete, says something about where adidas now sits: a company that treats its most serious engineering as a cultural object as well as a competitive one. Construction
Everything here is subtraction. The upper on this class of racer is cut to the minimum, an ultra thin material with almost no overlays, because every gram sits at the end of a long lever. The midsole is thermoplastic polyester elastomer with carbon rods embedded rather than a flat plate, which lets the forefoot articulate while the shoe rolls you off the toe. Outsole rubber is applied sparingly and only where it is needed, which is why shoes in this category have a short competitive life and should not be used for daily mileage. The earth toned finish covers the whole build rather than colour blocking it. Treat the upper as delicate: do not scrub it, do not soak it, and store it unlaced.
