Designed by Tinker Hatfield and released on 29 November 2021 as part of the Air Jordan 3 line. This release has a canvas upper in Dark Hazel/Multi-Color. The Air Jordan 3 is the model that changed everything: Tinker Hatfield's first shoe for the line, the one that introduced elephant print and moved the Jumpman onto the tongue, converting a signature basketball shoe into a design series with its own material code. A Patchwork treatment plays directly with that legacy, cutting the upper into panels of different materials so the shoe becomes an assembly of surfaces rather than a single statement. On any other silhouette that would be decoration. On the 3, whose entire fame rests on a material choice, it reads as a comment on the model itself. Style code DO1830 200.
Multiple textures need a single tone above them. Recipe one: black wide leg trousers, a black crewneck, a grey overcoat, everything plain so the panel changes are the only interest in the outfit. Recipe two: raw denim with a cuff, a cream knit, a leather jacket, which matches material richness in the shoe with material richness in the fit without adding pattern. Never pair with prints. Best for dry days, evenings and colder months. Elephant print earned its status by escaping the shoe. The grey cracked pattern Hatfield introduced on the 3 now signals Jordan Brand with no logo attached, which is the highest thing a material can achieve in this business, and it is a large part of why Air Jordan turned sneaker collecting into a mass activity. Spike Lee's Mars Blackmon advertising ran during this era, and rappers including 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z carried the shoes into music. Patchwork means the panels are doing the work, and the 3 gives them a strong frame: a defined toe, a structured heel, and the classic overlay positions that elephant print usually occupies. Nike Air cushioning, part of the line from the Air Jordan II, sits below. Multiple materials in one upper means uneven ageing, so each surface needs its own approach: soft dry brush on textured panels, damp cloth on smooth ones, conditioner only where it belongs. Do not wet clean the whole shoe at once. Lace through every eyelet, since the 3 relies on midfoot hold, and keep it away from rain where different materials will absorb at different rates.
