Bricks & Wood x New Balance 1000 A Different Bounce
Bricks & Wood x New Balance 1000 A Different Bounce
Culture Note™️ / ملاحظة الثقافة
Origin
Released on 21 February 2025 and part of the 1000 line. This release has a mesh upper. A Different Bounce is a Bricks and Wood project on the 1000, and the title is doing real work: it is a claim about feel rather than about looks, which is unusual in a collaboration and very much in this brand's register. New Balance has never been a hype house. It started in 1906 near Boston as an arch support company, made the Trackster in 1960 as the first running shoe offered in varying widths, and has stayed private under Jim Davis since 1972, building its identity around fit and manufacturing rather than around image. Giving a Los Angeles label a deep archive runner and letting it name the shoe after how it rides is a fair summary of how this company collaborates. The code is M1000BD1.
Utility
Two recipes. Wide black trousers with a heavy white tee and a grey work jacket lets the shoe read as the only shaped thing in the outfit. Or loose washed denim with a printed tee for the version that leans street, where the runner's bulk balances a relaxed hem. This one suits walking days, long weekends and travel, and it wants a trouser with enough width to break over the sole. Buy true to length and use width fittings if the midfoot presses. Brush any suede or nubuck dry rather than wetting it, wipe the midsole with a damp cloth and mild soap, and give the shoe a day off between wears so the foam recovers.
Influence
This brand's collaboration list is deliberately non celebrity: Aime Leon Dore, whose founder Teddy Santis became creative director of Made in USA in April 2021, Paul Smith on a 576 in June 2018, Kawhi Leonard's OMN1S from February 2019 and Action Bronson across several models including a 990v6 Baklava. Independent labels sit naturally in that company. The wider cultural backdrop is the accidental one: the 990 becoming the archetypal American dad shoe, worn for comfort rather than status, then normcore and high fashion reclaiming that plainness in the 2010s. Independent designers were the first people to see that opportunity, and they are still the ones the brand builds with.
Construction
The 1000 gives a partner a lot to work with: a layered upper with several panel breaks, a substantial midsole and a heel with real volume, so material and colour placement change the shoe's character without any structural rework. Look for where the textures shift, since that is where the collaboration lives. Underfoot, New Balance has split structure from cushioning since ENCAP arrived with the 995 in 1986, a polyurethane rim around a soft foam core, and its later foams keep that logic, with Fresh Foam tuned zonally to put cushioning and support in specific places and FuelCell built as a nitrogen injected TPU and EVA blend for rebound. Expect a substantial shoe that holds its shape rather than one that squashes flat.
