Hoka Mafate Speed 2 Black Castlerock
Hoka Mafate Speed 2 Black Castlerock
Culture Note™️ / ملاحظة الثقافة
Origin
Released on 28 December 2023 and part of the Mafate Speed 2 line. This piece is made in monomesh in Black/Castlerock. Mafate is the name Hoka reaches for when the terrain gets serious, and the Speed 2 is the version tuned for moving quickly over it rather than merely surviving it. The whole company exists because two French trail runners, Nicolas Mermoud and Jean-Luc Diard, decided in 2009 that a thicker outsole would let them attack descents instead of braking down them, and a Mafate is that thesis at full volume. Black Castlerock is the least decorative way to own one: near-black upper, grey-toned midsole and overlays, no colour to soften the size of the platform. It is a mountain shoe styled like a city shoe, which is a large part of why it left the mountain.
Utility
On trail, pair it with a mid-height merino sock and a fitted short so nothing catches the collar, and use it on rocky, technical days rather than smooth fire road. Off trail, Black Castlerock works with washed black denim, a shell jacket and a heavy grey hoodie, the gorpcore read that a monochrome trail shoe does effortlessly. Fit runs like a trail shoe should, snug through the midfoot with room at the toes for descents, so try it late in the day when your feet are larger. After a wet outing, knock off the mud dry, remove the insole, and let both air out fully. No machine washing, no radiator drying.
Influence
Mafate carries the most interesting design footnote in Hoka's recent history. Nicole McLaughlin, working as a collaborator with the brand, built the Mafate Three2 with a Vibram sole unit and a four in one gaiter system in a High Risk yellow and red colourway, a piece that treated a trail shoe as a modular object rather than a fixed product. That project told the fashion audience something the ultrarunning audience already knew, that the Mafate platform is the most engineered thing in the line. Hoka's credibility was built at races like Western States and UTMB, where the cushioning advantage on long descents was decisive, and Mafate sits squarely in that lineage.
Construction
This is trail build logic. The oversized cushioned stack is there for repeated hard landings on rock and root, and Hoka's approach of sinking the heel into the midsole rather than sitting it on top is what stops that much foam from rolling on uneven ground. The upper on a Mafate is the protective end of the range, closer-woven and more heavily overlaid than a road mesh, because debris and abrasion matter more than airflow. Black Castlerock hides trail dirt for far longer than a light colourway, which is a real functional advantage on a shoe you will drag through mud. Style code 1126851-BCSTL identifies this exact colour execution.
