    Culture Note™

Designed by Peter Moore and released on 5 March 2003 as part of Nike's Dunk SB line. This release has the Classic Green/Black-White-Red colourway. Green, white and red on a Dunk Low Pro SB, and a nickname that Nike never put on the box. Heineken is collector shorthand for this colourway, not a partnership, and the fact that a beer name stuck to a skate shoe tells you how the SB line was received: as something the audience named for itself. Nike came to skating late and from a position of enormous power. This was the company that had started in 1964 as an Oregon importer of Onitsuka Tiger, taken the Nike name in 1972, and by 1980 held roughly half the US athletic shoe market. The SB Dunk was its attempt to earn a room it had not been invited into.
Two ways. First, keep it skate honest: loose dark denim stacked over the collar, a white tee and a plain black cap, letting the green and red do everything. Second, treat it as a colour piece with black wide leg trousers and a cream knit, so the shoe sits like a signal at the bottom of a quiet outfit. Padding through the tongue and collar makes SB Dunks fit snugger than a general release, so many people go true and lace a touch looser rather than sizing up. Red and green bleed into white if you soak them, so clean panel by panel with mild soap, blot rather than scrub, and stuff with paper while they dry.
Nike SB's relationship with subculture has not always been comfortable. In 2005 the line appropriated Minor Threat's 1981 album art for a tour flyer, drew a public rebuke from Ian MacKaye, and Nike apologised on 27 June 2005 and settled out of court. That episode is the honest context for how SB operated in its early years: borrowing the language of scenes it was buying its way into. What it also produced was a collecting culture in which colourways got nicknamed, traded and mythologised by the people wearing them rather than by the marketing department, which is a rarer thing for a company this size to have generated.
Pro SB means the Dunk was rebuilt for impact rather than for looks. A skate execution takes the same panelled court upper and adds padding where the foot takes repeated landings, particularly through the tongue and collar, and it uses a grippier board feel underfoot than a general release. The three colour blocking here is done in panels, so the green carries the body while white and red work as separation, which is precisely why the nickname attached itself so fast. Nike's outsole heritage runs back to Bowerman's waffle iron and the pursuit of traction without weight, and a skate sole is a direct descendant of that thinking. Style code 304292 302 confirms the pair.
